Can red wine cure gout? | Arthritis Information

Share

Three days ago my third attack of gout started. The first two were excruciating and centered on the big toe and ball of my right foot, a classic case as I understand it. This time I  felt a twinge in the morning but by six pm I was in trouble and my right ankle and top of my right foot were becoming very painful and it was becoming increasingly difficult to stand. I was under the impression that it was only beer (as far as alcohol is concerned) that could trigger attacks as it contains purines (whatever they were!  ) so as I was feeling miserable I decided I might as well drink a bottle of red wine with the lovely meal my wife had cooked. Day 2&3 I paid for this mistake as I have beeen reduced to crawling around the floor like a baby in agony!

My questions are these: why, after dinking the wine did my symptoms almost totally disappear? - I could actually feel it getting better ( and I had taken NO medication whatsoever - I had none). I can find no other documented example and the Arthritic charities I have called are baffled as indeed is my GP.

Secondly, why is only one foot ever affected and not the other (or both)? God knows how any poor bugger with both feet affected at the same time would cope..

Thanks in advance!
BleepBleep2008-11-20 17:15:34Hello BleepBleep, I found this site on gout and it says that
red wine produces more uric acid than the kidneys can filter
along with red meat and cream sauces.
You should ask your Dr. about drinking at all.

Not sure I have an answer, But wanted to say I support Red Wine....for medicinal purposes of course

Key is moderation.  My grandma Honey died last november 2007, she was 2 months from a 101. She would have me pour her a glass of wine or Crown Royal every evening. For her it was medicine. She would do her "medicine" early evening, she said it helped her bones from hurting.
As for curing arthritis I don't have a clue. I am glad you are feeling better.
HappyThanksgiving,
Lisa

........................me on the other hand I pour myself a lot of wine and crown royal because it numbs the pain of my sh*tty life!  BUT, this place rocks and makes me feel so much better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now this is really strange, I have had gout attacks 3 to 4 times a year for the last 3 years. I have given up alcool for the last 4 months to avoid the torture. it has helped. But in the last 2 weeks I have had on average a bottle and a half of white wine with no problems. Now please do not risk an attack from what my experience. I am actually enjoying wine at moment of writing this. Further to this it seems that the wine has actually reduced overall stiffness. Not entirely sure, but I am running up and down stairs.

Please experiment as this is working great for me, although this rebound in drinking may lead me to the AA.

Docs dont know everything there is about gout

Again please share your experience if similar to mine.
