Hand skin problem | Arthritis Information

Hi I posted a couple days ago about being on pred and feeling great at 20mg and then I started to taper and felt like crap.  Well I have one more question, for years my hands have looked like dry red cracked skin, way worse in the winter.  My hands have looked like this for years.  My pcp just said dry skin use more lotion, I use a ton of lotion it doesn't help.  My rd's have looked at my hands and commented on them like they look awful and I should go to a dermatologist.  Well when I was on the 20mg of pred my hands looked completely normal.  My mom said she hasn't seen my hands look that good since high school and I graduated 12 years ago!  Does anyone else have this problem or any info on it.  The skin is only like that on my hands.  Thanks!reegie, Try this, I have used it in the past and it works really well.

IO has a good idea...  (but must you yell, IO? )

I have Sjogrens and was told never to use lotions....... use creams.. or oils.......  some lotions can add to the problem w/ alcohol in them....

vaseline is the best...... put it on.. put gloves on.. go to bed.......  you will be thrilled w yourself when you wake.

ETA:  cotton gloves.

Silicone Glove is petroleum based (sorta like a vaseline) but not greasy. My husband's doctor told him to use it, he has Man hands, winter dry, crack, large hands.
inflamedOnline2008-12-06 08:50:04Does anyone find it weird that my hands would heal up with the pred?Sounds like you may have contact dermititis, which is treated with a topical steroid cream, so it's not weird that taking oral steroids would clear it up. (No amount of moisturiser will alleviate this condition)

Man, you need a new doctor. If it is contact dermititis, that's a common and easy DX which they should have been able to pinpoint in about 30 seconds.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/contact-dermatitis/DS00985I would definitely schedule an appt with a dermatologist -- and tell him how they cleared up while on pred....
