What do you eat? | Arthritis Information

We all love discussing food and exchanging recipes, and recent discussions around here made me wonder, what kind of diet do people have? Do you think diet affects your RA or your overall health?

Also, when I was traveling this summer I noted how different diets were from region to region, and what people considered healthy was different.

A typical diet for me would be:

Whole grains: Every day. Breakfast is almost always slow cooked oats with raisins, sometimes apples or berries, seeds, nuts, and maple syrup. I eat brown rice almost every day. Whole Wheat bread 2 or 3 times a week. I buy really good hardy local bakery bread with things like olives in it.

Vegetables: Lots every day, and a large variety, about half of them cooked and a big salad with nuts, seeds and/or cheese almost every day.

Fruit: berries every day and one or two other pieces a day

Nuts and seed: small servings a couple of times a day, including sesame, sunflower, pumpkin seeds, and almond, cashew, walnut, pistachio, hazelnut, pine, and macadamia nuts.

Cheese: 2 or 3 times a week

Tofu or tempeh: 1 or 2 times a week

Beans: 1 or 2 times a week

Chicken or fish: 1 or 2 times a week

Red meat: about once a month

Eggs: 1 or 2 times a week

Dairy: Yoghurt or kefir every day

Sweets: every day

We do most of our cooking at home and I eat that way about 80% of the time. The other 20% I eat noodles, pasta, pizza, and restaurant food.

What do you eat?

Gimpy-a-gogo2008-12-09 03:28:39On Prednisone?  Anything that isn't nailed down.

Fruit, veggies, pork, beef, chicken, eggs, and a few sweets.  No seafood.
I usually eat oatmeal or cheerios for breakfast
Green tossed salad with 1 tbs cheese maybe fruit & nuts or soup for lunch.
Meat (usually chicken or pork) vegetable and potato or noodles for dinner.
I have 1 or 2 sweet treats per day- a mini candy bar, cookie or 1/2 serving ice cream.
That's Mon-Fri
Weekends I'll have toast one morning and eggs another. Lunch will be a modest sandwich 1/8 lb meat, 1 tsp mayo, wow chips. Dinner may be a fattening gourmet type dish. Usually have a loaf of italian bread around to accompany it. I always buy or make dessert for the family but I either just have a sliver or abstain.
you do great, Giimpy...
I have a yogurt and a Kashi (fiber) bar for breakfast...  a hard boiled egg and a V=8 for snack.. lunch is almost always a salad..(LOVE salads) w nuts and berries and a balsamic vinagrette....... dinner is often bad........ last night was chicken/swiss on whole wheat bread.. I am too tired to cook sometimes and w/ my H out of town M-F I eat on the Fly... I could easily live on salads at dinner though and sometimes do add that instead... I am bad about my night snack (necessary to take bed meds) and sometimes it's pudding (low fat) or even (gasp!!) ice cream.... I could "clean up my diet and stop more of the snacking... but that'll have to be after the holidays!!!  .

Fruit, veggies, pork, beef, chicken, eggs, and a few sweets.  No seafood.

LOL....Thanks for the laugh. I eat everything you have mentioned above, including seafood and fresh water fish. I feel my diet is well rounded. I will never subscribe to some of the extremist measures, that seem to work for some. Food actually isnt that important to me.

I only eat red meat maybe two to three times a month. When I do , I usually like a nice filet.
Breakfast....this morning, Browmberry whole multigrain bread , toasted (the best in the world)
edited to add: Love Vegtables, and salads. Eat them daily
inflamedOnline2008-12-09 06:00:59 basically a 1950's style diet. But with an eye towards lower sugars/fats etc  I try to get everyone to eat whole grains etc. and it works, except for bread.. Neither  my  little girl nor I can even swallow whole wheat bread.. gag.

Its a  "if its Monday it must be meatloaf" kind of thing. Chicken, hamburger in all its incarnations, Sunday roasts, pork chops..

Breakfast is usually cereal or fruit or eggs and toast. Kids ALWAYS have fruit and milk at every meal.

Lunch might be a sandwich or soup with fruit.

Supper is  a meat, veggie and starch.

We eat salads on occasion, but otoh we don't eat desserts or junk food.  Chips are a very rare occurance around here. I never bake cookies, we have cake only on birthdays.

I refuse to cook fish.. Occasionally we might eat a fish fry at a cafe, but we arent fish eaters.

 oh well.
For me, food can be a wee bit of a problem as being a caterer, I get to taste HEAPS of things. Its quality control dontcha know!!

A typical day...

Breakfast.....Zilch except for decaff coffee and meds not required to be taken with food

Mid Morning..... A sandwich and banana with my meds, the banana because Im trying to raise my potassium level which is very low.

Lunch..... Salad bowl with chicken, tuna or smoked salmon, fruit, nuts, decaff.

Mid afternoon.... Usually fruit and sometimes a cherry ripe bar or chocolate peanut slab.

Dinner.....Usually something like pasta, curry/rice dishes, meat and 3 vege dishes, steak meals, BBQ foods and salads and very rarely a dessert. Always wine. ( MTX doesnt figure in my life so far !)

11pm or thereabouts...A banana  or handful of dried apricots and pot of yogurt with night meds.

We dont keep butter in the house but use an olive oil  or avocado oil spread. Hubster and I both drink low fat milk, restrict salt and always check saturated and total fat levels on most things we eat.

ETA: I do eat seafood at least 3 times a week..mainly fresh fish, mussels, smoked roe or paua ( like abalone)
LyndeeNZ2008-12-09 06:30:41I want SnowOwl's baked potato for dinner!!!  A small cup of coffee when I get up; breakfast is typically a couple of meal-replacement bars for breakfast (ZonePerfect banana is my favorite) at work.  I usually go out for lunch; Chipotle is my fave lunch place.  I typically have some sort of grilled chicken and greens (at Chipotle, that translates to chicken tacos - hold the sour cream and cheese).  Dinner is typically some form of lean meat (usually chicken), served with a couple of vegetables and some fruit.  Fiber One cereal for a late night snack.  Somewhere in amongst all that is my daily Coke.  I'll give up my Coke when you pry it from my cold dead hand.  I also have 2-3 drinks per week - almost always a glass of red wine or a bottle of Sam Adams.

Diet is very important to me because I feel so much better when I eat:

Breakfast: Yogurt, fruit, nuts, 3 minute egg with a slice of whole grain bread.

Snack:  More fruit

Lunch:  Salad and/or some type of Mexican food.  Low fat. Avocado and tomato, beans

Dinner:  Fish, seafood, chicken, pork, beef once a month and it's usuall a rib eye steak
More veggies, salad, brown rice, curries, stir frys, Mexican food, pastas,
              Japanese noodles, beans.

Snacks:  Fruit, usually grapes, energy bars, some cheese once a couple of times a week.

Use only olive and grapeseed oils, no prepared foods except for pasta.  Most vegetables and meat are organic.  Some fruits are organic.  Nuts, yogurt, fruit and vegetables are everday staples.

My diet really influences how well I'm doing.  We've been eating out a lot and I'm suffering because of it.  Bon Appetit.  Lindy

Looks to me like you eat everything you can shove into your fat little face Lisa...everytime I see you at the store I want to laugh at the amount of groceries in your cart...and all fattening-ass junk food too.  Your poor husband, don't you feed him anything good and healthy?

So Funny infLamed:  If I might "qoute" Lev........Blah blah blah blah blah blahhh blahhh bla...bla bla blah......Oh ONE MORE blah....

Really stupid , piss off.
Breakfast everyday is oatmeal 1/2 cup with 1 T flaxseed ground and a handful of ground almonds and a handful of raisens. I occ add cranberries or fresh berries. I serve this with toast.

The rest of the day, I eat like gimpy except I cannot wrap myself around the tofu except adding it to spagetti. I have recently added hummus to my diet which is good.

I am a cheese addict though, that is my downfall. Not sure how I will ever give that up. I often times substitute cheese for meat in my meals. I eat lots of beans and rice. .lorster2008-12-09 11:11:55The thought of tofu makes me want to hurl.  I don't eat much dairy either - the occasional pizza or ice cream bar is about it.
No Pop Tarts?  C'mon.  Give it up, show of hands for Pop Tarts.  <raising hand for cherry Pop Tarts - do they count as a serving of fruit?>  can't do tofu... my YDD does it.. loves it.. and lost lots of weight on a diet w/ tofu as protein....tofu is OK in Hot & Sour Soup...I eat everything. That is i believe the more different things you eat the more you will get what you need. Fruits, nuts, yogurt, oatmeal, veggies, eggs, meat. Salad with blu cheese dressing. That has probiotics also. But mostly it is my favorite. Seems lately that fruit juice makes me feel better. Maybe just my imagination. Strawberry Kiwi, and apple juice. Makes me feel more hydrated. We have a policy in the house that dinner has to have at least 3 different colored foods in it - while not perfect, it helps to make sure we get a variety of different nutrients.

And pop-tarts with rainbow sprinkles don't count. http://www.poptarts.com/#/games

kweenb2008-12-09 13:40:41I have a confession to make.  Aunt Flo busted in today and demanded I take her to the store to buy Ben & Jerry's brownie ice cream (both kinds - all chocolate and black raspberry chocolate).  At least she has good taste. I used to not like tofu but now I love it. I press it, cube it, and then fry it in the wok until it is golden brown. Then it loves sauce, like spicy nut sauce, sesame sauce, orange sauce, squash sauce. It has no flavour so you can put anything.

Tofu is the blank canvas of the protein palate.OMG, I love Ben and Jerrys. I made an apple crisp last night for dessert and had my hubby stop by and get ice cream. He bought Blue Bunny.....I wanted Ben and Jerrys. I hate Blue Bunny anything.I think once you get past that texture thing with tofu, it is ok. That is the problem I have had with it. I take the firm brick, cut it into very small long strings and put it in with my spagetti. You cannot taste it but it is such a good protein alternative when you don't put meat in spagetti. Kids like it too. I made a dark 'n' spicy ginger cake last night and some cashew sauce to go on it. But then I put it in the freezer 'cause it's for a dinner party next week.

Not before I tried a slice, though.gimpy.. your comment about tofu is what my Megs says too.. it takes on the flavor of the seasonings...

and lorster.... you're sneaky!!!
I made a dark 'n' spicy ginger cake last night and some cashew sauce to go on it. But then I put it in the freezer 'cause it's for a dinner party next week.

Gimpy,

That sounds scrumptious.  Can I have the recipe?
Yes, please share.
I made a dark 'n' spicy ginger cake last night and some cashew sauce to go on it. But then I put it in the freezer 'cause it's for a dinner party next week.

Please tell me there's no tofu in it.
My problem with food is remembering to eat. I can sit at the keyboard for hours completely oblivious to anything else. I haven't had a normal appetite for most of the past year, but somehow I do eat enough. Missing about three meals a week isn't all that unusual for me.

What helps me is remembering to feed the kitties. Being in the kitchen for that tends to get me off the 'puter long enough that I'll grab something to eat.
OMG I thought I was the only one like that.  If the husband and kids are out of the house not whining about lunch/dinner/etc I forget to eat too.  Very odd.
JasmineRain2008-12-09 20:18:04Oh mab I wish I had your problem. All I do is think about food.  I love eating so much and I can eat so little if I want to maintain my weight. I've given up thinking I'll lose anything. Prednisone has made me eat anything and everything in sight.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it

Bob
I sure will post that recipe, as soon as I have 20 minutes to type it in. I've been so smokin' busy the last few days.
