Just wondering what you all do for exercise, what time of day, and how often? I'm really lost with out running..but obviously I can't do that anymore.. any suggestions?

Thanks, Leilaleila, when I'm not doing as well I swim, but when I'm good like right now I bike ride and I just got a Wii Fit which I LOVE. Can't stop exercising!dance to a hip hop cd 3 or 4 x per week, 30 mins on my lunch hr.I have a treadmill and a recumbent stationary bike I use everyday.  I love my wii fit also!! I can't do most of the yoga as I have very non-bendy knees, but I love the boxing and the step. Also all its little comments...hilarious!I do alot of floor things as in stretching , crunches , leg lifts.

Also some light weights ( 3lbs. ) with either the treadmill or
stepper, depending how I am feeling. I will get outside to walk
when I am feeling good. I do miss jogging , but you do what
you can.
I usully work out in the late afternoon. If I am stiff in the morning
I will do lots of stretches to loosen up.
do stretches help? I usually just stand in the shower and feel sorry for myself (which doesn't burn as many calories as I'd like) http://www.arthritisinsight.com/forum/forum_images/post_button_smiley.gifI use to run too.  Now I walk on my treadmill but I put on a pretty steep incline...still a vigorous work out.  We also have one of those big nautilus machines that work all the muscle groups so I use that too.  We just got a Wii so I'm excited to get the Wii fit and give that a go.The stretches help alot!! Not just floor stretches but standing
and lifting your leg and bending the knee ( if the knees are stiff ).
Lifting my arms with or without the weights, lifting to the front
and sides with many reps. Also small circles to wide circles.
Touching your toes going from side to side. Almost like getting
ready for a run.
I have always been athletic so it just comes naturally for me as I
think it will come naturally for you.

I do water exercises 3x a week and I golf several times a week.  I walk the 9 holes.  Also use 3 and 5 lb weights several times a week.  LindyI tried Curves and it just about killed me.  Now, I swim 2-3 times a week.  LOVE IT!

hi  there I swim every other day 60- 70  laps , front crawl only as my knees don't like me much. I also ride the stationary bike with no tension and bend and stretch yoga stuff on non swim days.  Curves was not the exercise for me either although it is a good program.2trees2008-12-10 13:42:05I did a lot of swimming when I was preparing for triathlons, and to me, no ipod=deadly boredom. Of course that's the exercise that all my docs want me to do...go figure. That's God's sense of humor for you.
Now I'm going to try these emoticons one more time...don't laugh at my lameness.

also have OA in the knees and grade 3 chondromalacia...knees don't like me eitherHi Leila, I also have OA in knees.  Had lt. replaced last summer.  The rt. hurts but I take a pain pill and exercise anyway.   I'll have it replaced in a year or so.  I had to wait till I was in clinical remission before I could exercise again because I had RA and PsA in almost all of my joints.  Don't wait to start exercising again.  Swimming is boring but water exercises are fun.  LindyHey-I used to run too.  I now power walk 5 miles a day, 6 days a week in the mornings.  Before my meds kicked in my walks were like torture, but I'm very stubborn and a wee bit vain!  I like to walk. I go for walks when ever i can. Clears my head. I go nuts when to sick to walk. Been doing it for years. Forever that is.I alternate between treadmill and air climber. I would love to have a Wii. have oa in my knees. I really beleive exercising is helping.Swimming is the best. Put a life jacket ( vest type ) on and swim away !! I have doubled my exercise time since diagnosis.  Work out in AM, I'm a morning person and have zero energy at night.  Half hour on treadmill alternating with stationary bike, then at least another half hour of stretches and floor exercises, alternating with yoga work on my hands.  I need to start weights too but there aren't enough hours in the day!  Still working on that.  I took up golf last summer in a major way and I admit I'm concerned about being able to play next year, hand and shoulder issues.  I'm in Michigan and there's no golfing right now, so I'm trying to stay in shape for that as well. I wanted to start physical therapy but my rheumatologist said not yet.  What is the deal with that?  I thought that the whole idea was to try to keep as active as possible to keep as much range of motion as you can.   I used to love to mountain bike and rode on the old magnetic trainer in the winter.  I've since gone over to a nice stationary bike for the cold months.  Now if this damn fatigue would go away so I could feel like swinging a leg over the bike again.I do Hydrotherapy twice a week combined with swimming. When I'm not bad go dancing a couple of evenings a week. I would ask the rheumatologist why not.I have been swimming at a local college and I'm really enjoying.

Having some problems with my feet, tendonitis, etc.  and I find this great.

I love to walk,  I enjoy the fresh air as much as the walk.

In the meantime though this is working for me.  I'm thinking about joining the school gym for a month while the pool is closed and trying the bike and elliptical.
Walking, daily - Pilates, twice a week - Swimming, once a week.

But, I am a retired dance teacher and am used to being fit.... I believe that fitness is the key to the body working to it's optimum performance, if you are fit (and no I don't mean slim and lean) your whole system works better.

You don't have to walk at a fast pace, just walk, you don't have to swim as if you are wanting to get into the olympic team, just take it easy and do what you can ... anything is better than nothing ... then when your fitness level increases you will be able to do more.
