GOING TO CHRISTMAS PARTIES KNOWING THEY ARE SICK BUT LORDY THEY ARE TOO IMPORTANT TO MISS.    help me.

i can not understand their lack of caring for themselves or others.  w.w.

my guess is they are the most important human being on earth and they do not care who gets in their path.    HELP!!!

Me too!  I feel the same way.  I will warn you way ahead of time if I have to go out.  I will say don't touch that or you better wash your hands often because I have a cold or whatever.  I think I worry about their safety more than they do but I was raised to stay in and rest up too until the cold passes.

also, know what you mean about the drug we love to hate -- prednisone!  I am starting to taper it now.  I feel it already.

it also makes it hard to fall sleep sometimes and restless along with the other usual side effects.

take it easy.

With regard to work environments,  I think people cannot afford to take a day off for being sick. Most save their sick days for when their children are sick. In social situations or out in public, I think it is plain rude! When I go to the pharmacy, I always do the drive - thru to avoid the sickies. I always use my own pens when I have to sign for a debit charge, etc. And I have worn a mask on air flights. my apartment is a steril zone, lol.  A few years ago, all the markets put giant tubs of sanitizer wipes at the enterance of their stores so we can wipe down the handle of the carts. yay! Knock on wood, but I havent been sick since sept 2002. I always wash my hands and have a bottle of hand sanitizer always available to me. 1 at home. 1 in my truck, 1 in my work truck. The last time I was sick it started with shingles all over my head and face. Then I got real sick after that. Missed 1 month of work and took about another month to feel better. The system works.I'm with you.....I can't stand it.  Employees come in sick, patients in our physical therapy office come in sick, or bring their sick kids, people smirk and say their kids have a temperature and are sick, but they give them tylenol and send them to school or daycare.

It sucks.  Not fair to anyone.  As far as the parents doing that to their kids, I think it's horrible.  When a child is sick, they deserve to be home in a warm house being cared for, not stuffed with tylenol and shoved out.
Speaking of colds... I'm having a bit of insomnia thanks to the sudafed I took for the annoying cold I seem to have acquired.  My oldest boy is a bit on the snotty side too, but luckily sudafed doesn't keep him awake. And yes, I'll be going to work in the morning (after picking up a new box of contraband sufafed).

I've sent my kids to school with colds many times.  If they just have some sniffles and/or a cough but are not too sick, then off to school they go with a dose of ibuprofen and cough/cold meds.  By the time the symptoms start, they've already been contagious for a couple days (or more), and besides, they most likely picked it up at school.  Of course, if they have a high fever or if they feel really bad they stay home, but a mild fever is not a reason by itself to keep a kid home.  Most schools have "fever guidelines" that state a fever of less than 100.4 axillary is OK.  I mean seriously - my oldest son would have probably missed a third of the school days so far this year if I had to keep him home every time he had a cold.  If I keep a kid home because he's "suffering" from a cold, and he proceeds to run around the house like a rabid monkey, eat everything not nailed down in the kitchen, and play video games all day, then I know he's well enough to be taken right over to school for the rest of the day. JasmineRain2008-12-15 03:41:22i am not talking about school, i am talking about parties and play events and things they have no business being at.  your house. my house etc.    the school will send them home and trust me the school's do send these children home and then mom just takes them shopping and out to lunch and the next party.   full well knowing they are making people sick.  wonderwoman
There is no doubt in my mind that the overuse of antibacterial/sanitising products weakens the immune system. That is my personal opinion and if we were to look at how many are affected by asthma/exzcema (oops sp) these days, it proves a point. In 3rd world countries those conditions are rare. Immune problems in 1st/2nd world countries are increasing at an amazing rate and so are the sales of antibacterial/sanitising products.

I am one who uses sanitisers up to a 100 times a day. I have to as I am a caterer and the law states that I MUST sanitise my benches/hands etc everytime I touch something that maybe unsanitary and when I change what I am doing/preparing on a particular table. To be awarded an A certificate for my business ( which I have) my staff are all trained to do the same. We must take temps of all freezers/fridges/chillers every day, we must have a schedule of sanitising practices/what we use/how often/how we apply. Etc!
OK, I understand the reasons as food poisoning ( a totally different kettle of fish) is high in this country especially during summer. We are an intelligent lot here in NZ, and I cant figure for the LIFE of me why the incidences of FP are so high! There are many immigrants who have language problems and are in the food biz that contribute to the problem but in the end, its up to the certificate of health peeps to get them on the right track at the start of their biz. I mean to say, we DONT live in grass huts but Id sure like to. Really.
( Man, am I ranting here!! lololol)

OK. I am an advocate for getting back to nature in more ways that one in our home life. I lived in Italy for 10 years and saw very little in the way of 'sanitary practices' in the food world where I worked and cant tell you of anyone I knew there with RA/MS etc.
I have holidayed many times in India/Bali/Singapore/Hong Kong etc and cant recall  anything other  than good handwashing in any  food business'. I ate at street stalls in all ( well some, Singapore dont count!) those dusty dirty cities cities. no probs. Come to NZ? Be careful apparently.

Im lost here. !!!! But I hope I have left my point.

Wonderwoman. On Dec 11, you posted you had shingles but yet you went to church and had company despite this. I responded to your company thread by telling you, you should not be around pregnant women, babies, children, and people who had never had chicken pox. consequences of a pregnant woman being exposed to shingles could have devastating consequences to the unborn child.   And then you post this when you did the exact thing last week that you are complaining about now. Did I mis understand something? Or maybe miss another thread that addressed this? I don't get this post.I'm not talking about the sniffles, we have had a lot of patients come in with stomach flu...getting sick in our waste baskets, etc etc.....a little cold you can't avoid, if you have
strep throat, a big ol' sore throat, a stomach issue, a high fever, stay home and keep your kids home.   They laugh at me at work cause I am always washing my hands.  Fortunatley I don't get sick a lot, but I don't appreciate someone blatantly coming in without care.  I stick with my thoughts regarding kids....When my kids were sick, I kept them home, kept them warm, had them lay down, watch tv, read a book, sleep, made home made soup, kept them hydrated, etc.
LOL!  LyndeeNZ,
I am not laughing at you but I am laughing with you.  I do that sometimes.  It feels like I just have so much I want to say sometimes.:)

Sounds like you have been many places. I always wanted to travel.   getting older, 45 years and ra can put a damper on things.  still would like to see the beautiful coastal areas, costa rica, italy, etc. have a thing for beaches.

Debrakay,
they laugh at me at work too.  I will ask you in a heartbeat if you are sick if I hear you coughing or sneezing.  You know we ra folks are already on immunosuppressants.  so far my diligence has paid off.  I haven't been sick in years. I keep wipes with me and wash my hands very often. avoid the sick as much as I can anyway.  You know there are times when it is just impossible but I agree everybody should be conscious of spreading their sick germs to others.
take it easy.
lorster,  you are correct i do/did have shingles.  the first signs started after remicade on 12-4-08.   my company arrived in town 12-5-08 at this time i did not know i had shingles.  on saturday a good friend diagnosised me.   very beginining stage,  called doctor immediately got meds saturday night.   rash was gone externally on monday 12-8 but pain was extreme went to 2 doctors.  my RD believed it was shingles.  since saturday 12-6 i was on valtrex (an antiviral med), steriod pack plus more steriods and a nerve patch lidoderm.   all the shinlges were internal.  i tried to stay home as much as possible my company was pushing me and they thought it was rediculous that i would not go out and i asked everyone i got near if they had had chicken pox.  and i stayed away from kids.  i did not go out most of last week.   i do not know how contagious you are when you do not have external legions but i too did not want to make anyone sick.  and i have not been out at all this week.   and had people not come in from germany i would not have dared to go out last week because i am a firm believer in not spreading anything.   w.w.lorster,  i was suprised at how everybody acted like being sick was no big deal even having the shinlges and people came around me with the vomitting virus and flu like symptoms.  i try very hard to be considerate. w.w.i just read about shingles.   it said if the legions are covered up very unlikely you will spread chicken pox.  i only had a visible rash saturday and sunday the 6th and 7th of december.   they were on my left torso between my hip and ribs.  this area would have always been covered with lots of clothing.  and i am in total agreement with you Lorster had people not been here to see me from another country i would never have gone anywhere but the doctor.  w.w.bump this for Lorster!Shingles are only contaigous when they are oosing.I haven't been able to read all the responses.  But you are right, or so I was taught the same as you, if sick stay home.

BUT, I remeber when I worked in a nursing home, well heck when I worked for KFC also, when you "tried" to call off they wouldn't let you.  No lie, you would get things like, you will get a write up.  Or they would call me every hour to see if I was better to come in.  Or I have been told to come into work sick because other ppl come to work when they are sick and they don't whine about it.

Then you have meetings telling you to stay home if you are sick so you don't spread it.  And when someone (me) brings up how one "tries" to call off what happens.  You are then told you must have misunderstood them.  When no way in heck did you.

That was one thing I could never understand.  I still do not understand it.
I've only had two doses of MTX so far.  I've always washed my hands a lot, but doubled up since starting the medication.  My son had a terrible cold, he was in my house but I never went near him.  Well, you can guess, yesterday I came down with a massive sore throat and stuffed nose.  I have an art gallery and come in contact (not touching, just being in the same room) with a lot of people, and all the hand washing in the world didn't help me.  Either I picked up this more than two weeks ago, or it came through the air and got me.  Kind of nerve wracking due to the lung congestion you're supposed to watch out for, the rare complication with MTX.  Who could tell???
I can't complain too much, because up till now I've always been so healthy and would go years without a cold.  I feel it's the price I have to pay to try and get on top of the RA, but I admit I'm a little down right now.
Sorry, don't mean to whine.  Things could be a lot worse!  After an extemely busy day today from dusk to dawn, I have tomorrow off and can lounge around "eating bon-bons."
