Yet another fun pred side effect.

As I have posted before-I have alot of problems with my eyes.  Pick and "itis" and I get it.  Anyway, dr. this time found something else - Cataracts.  Huh?  I am 32!  It seems it is a possible side effect of pred. usage.  Nothing is ever easy.  At least I know why I have been seeing "halos" around objects at night.  I told him I would rather wait until the summer to have them removed.  I could have given him spring break but I am supposed to be out of town.  I gave up Thanksgiving for the jaw.  I gave up traveling out of town for christmas cause of the the chest inflammation.  Instead I am doing PT 3 times a week for 2 weeks and then twice a week once back in school.  I really want to keep Spring Break so I can visit my best friend in KY.

So-anybody else have the cataract side effect?

OH--Merry Christmas too!  I am sitting here watching the Polar Express with my 5yr old for the hundreth time.  We are baking Christmas cookies tomorrow and I already picked up the carrots to put outside for the Reindeer.  Bring on Santa!!

Hi Roccky, so much to deal with. I'm so sorry that this has happened but it's an easy fix, easier than most of the side effects and complicaitons from Pred.

I was on 40-45 mg. of Pred. for 4 years and I just found out this year that I have steroid induced cataracts. It seems that this type of cataract forms a little diffently and is identified easily. Apparently mine aren't ready to be removed and I'll probably wait till sometime next year for removal.

Enjoy your Christmas and don't think about it. It's an easy surgery and little or no recupp. time is needed. Lindy

Dr. had told me it was pretty easy. But, won't they just come back again??

hi Becky,  I had cataracts remover in 86 because of pred. It was a day surgery, about 3 hours and I was home, next day I could see so good, It was like someone had clearned a very dirty window  I had the lens replaced, which is the only way to go.  My husband had same thing done a few years later and had no problems,  I don;t need glasses, I do wear sun glasses to keep the glare down, too bright without them.  best of luck,  I don't think it matters if you wait.Hi Becky,

Sorry you are now dealing with this.  Cataracts do not come back.  A Cataract is your natural lens that has become yellow and hard.  The lens of the eye is in a capsule.  When the Cataract is removed and replaced with an artificial lens they will sometimes leave the back of the capsule in the eye to keep the vitreous from coming forward.  Sometimes that piece of capsule that is left will become hard and yellow.  A simple laser procedure can take care of that if need be.  It has been a long time since I have worked in Ophthalmology so I don't know about the newer lenses and if they still leave a piece of capsule there or not.  I'm sure Michelle knows.

Sounds like you guys are having some Xmas fun there Another question for you eye people.  Does the artifical lens aggravate sjorgen's?

hmmm.....seems to me I need to be googling some stuff.....

No, that should not be a problem.
I just found out I have a cataract in my right eye, which my doctor hadn't told me about - probably a blessing, I have had enough eye problems.  I was on predisone only 5 months, but so far osteoperosis and maybe now cataracts.  I am 52, so my age is against me.  But no more predisone for me, it didn't touch the pain I was in back at diagnosis.

Hey rocky.  I'm the same age as you and I also have mild cataracts AND glaucoma now from prednisone.   LinB is correct, cataracts is a pretty easy fix but for one problem.  My opthalmologist told me that when you are fairly young as we both are the risk for detached retinas is much higher after cataract removal surgery.

The optometrist I see said he has seen people on a medrol dose pack for allergies develop cataracts after only a week on the 'roids.  I've been on them since 2002.  Though most of that time the dose was 5mg daily, since July I've been on a very high dose.  I'm at between 45-50mg daily right now.
