Does anyone get this every time they get a cold? I do.  Even if it's not that bad.  My theory is that all it takes is a couple of big sneezes...but maybe it's something else.  Knock on wood, I've never had colds in my chest, never gotten pneumonia or anything, and I finally realized after a couple of years of going to the doctor thinking I had bronchitis or pneumonia or something, it was "just" costo.  I guess I'll take that over lung issues...mine isn't terribly painful, but pretty annoying.I don't need to have a  cold for costochondritis to flare up.  Mine is very painful at times and more than annoying.  It hurts to sit up in bed, turn over, lift or bend, etc.  Usually lasts a couple or three weeks and then disappears for a bit.

Ann
I get mine with asthma attacks.  ick

Ive had pleurisy and csto, and dang its hard to tell them apart.
sorry you have that happen, Katie, ann, Kathy...   seems bad to deal with as often as you do.I agree, costo is very uncomfortable, it even hurts wearing a bra!  Janie.

Nope, haven't noticed it with a cold. It just kinda comes on it's own. Haven't had it in quite a while... and now that I've said something.... LOL

I'm not sure that there's anything that can really be done for it other than anti-inflammatories and pain pills, both of which I'm sure you've tried.

Hope you feel better soon Katie....I  have no experience with this so I can't offer advice... Mine isn't too bad, I just notice it when someone hugs me or what not, and it's like I'm all bruised.  The first time I was dx, they dx pleurisy first, and I still don't know if it was both or just one.  But I've had doctors prod around and pinpoint the pain to the spot on the ribs where costo is.  I'm sorry for those who have worse pain than I, consider myself lucky!I have had this for about 30 years years from a slip and fall on the ice, landing on my right hand.  I went to the doctor and he said I had injured the cartiledge in my rib cage, which would inflame and I would have this for the rest of my life - but that it would come and go, and he was right and wrong.  It's never gotten better.  I have chronic inflammation through the ribs. I have lost quite a bit of cartilidge and rib expansion. The inflammation is visible along the sternum. My RD and I call it the "third boob".

I currently do PT. Ultrasound treatments help break up the inflammation and then we try to stretch the muscles to maintain as much rib elasticity as possible. Dr. 10yrs ago originally diagnosed this as costo but current RD feels that it is too chronic and too much inflammation.

If it gets really bad, cortisone injections do help.
