I have hyperplasia and have been given two options.  Take progesterone for 3 months and then have another biopsy to see the results or have a hysterectomy.  I've decided on the hysterectomy.  I hate the thought of surgery, but I think I'd feel better knowing this won't progress to uterine cancer.  I go to have this done in 3 weeks.

Would like to know opinions/experience with keeping the ovaries...or having them removed.

Thanks
keep the ovaries if at all possible.  without the ovaries you have no source of estrogen and all the issues that go along with that.  You want that estrogen as long as possible to prevent all the menopause symptomskel - sorry to hear this, and from what I have picked up over the years, buckeye is right.  hold on to as much of you as possible.  keep us informed, you know we care very deeply for you.  cathyI concur- keep the ovaries. It not only protects you from menopause symptoms but is beneficial for your heart as well to have that estrogen.

Sorry for your troubles- not sure what hyperplasia is? I had an endometrial ablation and myomectomy for heavy bleeding and fibroids. Is it related to that at all? I could have opted for a hysterectomy as well.

Kelly, I'm sorry to know this too.  I would opt for surgery too for the same reasons.

Sending love and prayers,

Pam

Kelstev, I don't have any input, just wanted to say I hope it goes well for you.Hi Kelstev,

I kept my ovaries and am happy I did for all the reasons given.  I hope you feel better soon and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you go through surgery...Hiking_gal
Thanks you all so much for your replies...it means a lot to me.

WTBRAF-Hyperplasia I think is caused by too much estrogen.  The lining of the uterus becomes very think...which results in abnormal bleeding (I've been bleeding for 4 months now)...some types of hyperplasia can lead to cancer.

SnowOwl-No, she didn't recommend that the ovaries be removed...she said she'd leave that up to me.  I told her that I'd like to have them removed  (figuring on one other cancer that I'd not have to worry about) She said she'd do the same thing...but now after reading most would keep the ovaries...now I'm not so sure.

Thanks again for all of your replies and well wishes
Kelly

I just had a total hysterectomy. Last year I went in for an endometerial ablation and the dr came out and told hubby my entire abdomen including ovaries were covered in endometriosis and she recommended I have a hysterectomy. I was asleep on the table and he told her no, so she ended up doing a partial. Fast forward to this year and she said I needed a complete hysterectommy. She and another surgeon used the davinci robot. the endometriosis had spread into my abdomen again and my bowels were completely covered in it and my remaining ovary was buried in it and could not be saved. Now I am on the lowest dose of estrogen by a patch .05 so far I haven't noticed any negatives and lots of positives!

sorry to hear of your troubles ....     I wish you well w/ your surgery.Sorry to hear about the surgery Kel. I would also keep the ovaries if possible. My sister has hyperplasia, the worry of cancer was there too but she had a partial hysterectomy and feels so much better. Shes never had any after problems, where as a friend of mine had a full hysterectomy and has suffered with hormone problems and the feeling that her womanhood was completely taken from her.Hi Klestev.

Sorry to hear that. I hope all goes well for you. Keep us posted. Thanks, you guys...I really appreciate your good thoughts and wishes.

I think I'm leaning more towards having the ovaries out as well.  From what I've heard from some other people is that they won't be functioning much longer anyway ...so why keep them and have another possible risk there in the future. My gynecologist (a woman) said she'd do the same.  Maybe I'm missing something..I don't know.  I still have some time to think about it anyway.

Thanks again
Hey Kelstev,  That sounds like a good idea.  The thing I forgot to tell you was I had my surgery when I was 30 years old so the decision to keep the ovaries made sense.  I reread my reply and wanted to clarify my particular situation and hope my answer didn't cause you any unecessary angst;  remember, all of our situations are different and unique to our circumstances.  I do hope you feel better.  I was extremely happy after my surgery and the recovery was quick.  Good Luck!  Hiking_gal

Thanks Hiking gal...yeah...I suppose it depends on the stage of life you're at.  I'll have to talk with my family doctor about this as well since I have to see him before the surgery anyway.

I'm sorry to hear you're having to go through this. I would think, based on what other's have said, that keeping your ovaries would be a good thing. I know my aunt had a total hys and now she has to take "pills to keep her from turning into a man." She's a funny lady.
