What do you like to do? | Arthritis Information

My hubby bought me a new program for my computer, for Christmas, that I can use for my card making. And I have not been able to use it or feel up to trying to start anything with since my fingers were not functioning well. So... I have been waiting until after I got my infusion, because I know my fingers will cooperate after that.

I have been soooo itching to make a card since I got the program. So... I am trying to get some inspiration and then hopefully by tonight I will have started on my cards again.

So... what hobbies or things do you like to do when you can do them?
I like to make cards too.  Right now, my middle daughter and I are working on save the date cards for my youngest's upcoming wedding.  We are also doing the menus, placecards and table numbers.
It helps that she got her degree in graphic design

I hope your fingers start feeling better quickly so you can put your new program to good use

Thanks, Lynn! I have not made many cards, but I did make my in-laws a Family wordbook for Christmas. It was a lot of work, mainly because my fingers would not bend and do what I needed them to do, but it turned out very nicely. It would have been better, if hubby would not have procrastinated about getting the copies of the pictures I needed for the book. He got them like 3 days before Christmas. I was still working on the book Christmas morning when I woke up. I did not get one page finished, but it turned out nice.

Everyone loved it. Especially, my in-laws. It was their Christmas present. I am going to make my mom one, but have not came up with any ideas for hers yet.

I hope you and your daughter have fun making all that stuff. I done some of my SIL's wedding favors for her wedding. It was fun. I like doing stuff like that. I am trying to get one of my nieces to let me do her wedding invitations, but she did not say for sure she wants me to do them for her.

That sounds like so much fun Joonie!

I cannot be trusted in the kitchen or the garden. I am not a patient person.

I used to play soccer, played one year varsity in college, and, although I was NEVER a long distance runner, I enjoyed jogging a mile a day.  What was probably RA made my feet have issues to where running isn't on my plate anymore.  I never loved it, I love playing sports more than anything.  So I am doing pilates and what not as much as possible and looking forward to playing soccer and basketball with my boys, as much as possible.  I would love to join an amateur team or play an individual sport but I think the key to my success is going to be variety, not using any one joint too much.

My RA first flared badly from playing handbells, which I can't do anymore.  When you think about the force that puts on your wrist, I guess it's no wonder!  I love music and may try to do something else with it in time. I played the saxophone in high school but I think if I can I'd like to learn a stringed instrument.  Piano is probably more feasible.

And I love art.  I'm not great at it but I enjoy the process.  I'm thinking of signing up for a class at a local musuem.  I'm worried about my wrists but I think if I do something like photography or painting I would be alright.  My 4 year old is doing a print/stamp class with my mom there on Friday morning, I'm so jealous but excited for him!
No, I have not. I have only made a few. For some reason... I love to make baby shower invitations. I guess because I done my SIL's baby shower by myself and I LOVED IT! It is just that I do not know many people who are preggo. LOL! So my talent is kinda useless, until I befriend a bunch of preggos LOL!After being married for 26 years with 3 kids while working 2 jobs....I forget what I like to do
But I plan to find out this year!

you go, wannabe! You find something that might help you unwind and relax. You did a very good job with the cards, Joonie!

I like scrapbooking and have thought about trying to make cards since I probably have everything I need with my scrapbooking supplies.  But I always end up at a dollar store picking up any cards I need.
Wanna get a GOOD laugh Joonie? I think I want to learn ballet!Sounds like fun, wannabe! Probably help you to keep your muscles in shape. I did not realize just how much muscle mass I have lost from limited ROM, inflammation and just not being able to move around well. It is depressing, that is for sure. But I am hoping to build the muscles up again.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a gymnatist, but my JRA kept me from trying to do it.
Yeah, Kelstev. most of what you use to make cards is scrapbooking tools. I do not have many scrapbooking tools, but I do have my cricut, I bought way back in 2006. It sat around for a long time, because of how bad the ole RA was. I am still learning to use it, and it is pretty cool! It does save my fingers and hands from doing things, as it cuts it out and I just sit there and watch it. As apposed to cutting with scissors or punches which I have a hard time doing.

You might want to look into getting on of them. It is soo fun and a good tool for us since we have a hard time using the everyday essentials used for scrapbooking.
Here is a card I made beginning of last year after the Remicade started working well.

I learned how to Weave this last year.  LOVED IT!  Now, I want to learn how to Quilt.
Wanna get a GOOD laugh Joonie? I think I want to learn ballet!
I don't think that's funny or odd at all.  I took Ballroom dancing once with my dad.  He was definitely better than I was.

I think you should go for it!
Nice work Joonie!

Yes Sno- I want to learn to dance.  I think ballet would be good to help with flexability and muscle building...if I can do it!  I have been afraid of being the oldest in the class I'm in my 20's x 2!
Thanks wannabe! I am hoping to make more of them. Not like I got someone to make them for, but it gives me something to do.

I did buy some new papers, while we were out christmas shopping for daughters clothes. Michaels had a sale on scrapbooking paper 4- and I bought worth of paper. I got a lot of the papers I had been wanting, but did not see spending 59 cents a piece for since I was going to be the only person who ever got to see the card anyways.

Hey Joonie- can you sell some "generic" types on ebay?

Me & kweenb must have been posting at the same time- thanks for the vote of confidence! I never see any classes around here being offered for weaving but it does sound like a relaxing way to be creative. Quilting? Not for me- I am known for sewing things to myself when I am mending.....
I enjoy reading, but my concentration has been so shot I haven't done much lately.  My real addiction is video games, helps keep my mind engaged and off of the pain while keeping my reflexes active, and I remap the keys so my hands don't have to move too much.  I also like to make cards in Word (think graphics not scrapbooking materials) when I have an occasion that calls for it...like when the stores don't have a "congrats on completing your body piercing apprenticeship" for my sister.  And finally I am a TV addict....I have a DVR and know how to use it!  Also, my mother's hobby is geneaology, but since I'm better on the computer, it's my job to record it on the family tree software.Sounds like a good idea wannabe. But not sure if I am up to doing that just yet. I like to hike, cook, garden and ride my horse.  When I'm not feeling too energetic, I will do punch hook rugs.  Creating cards sounds like a lot of fun too.  Enjoy it...Hiking_gal
Yeah, Kelstev. most of what you use to make cards is scrapbooking tools. My husband bought me a Craft Robo last year....just learning to use that now though,...I guess it's kinda like the cricut...but not quite...I just hate learning new thingsI make Porcelin Dolls, well I should say made, I haven't made one in about 2 years. I have a large collection, most are in boxes now, some I gave to family. I will take a fep pics and post. I loved making them, I even poured molds, cleaned green ware, fired, painted, sewed bodies, and sewed all the clothings. I need to sell my kiln and patterns and books, a friend bought my molds.
I love the card you made Jooni. very nice.

That sounds like a lot of work, those dolls. But probably only to me since I do not like dolls all that much. Dolls kinda creep me out. I at some point think they are going to come to life and kill me. And this was way before I even saw the horror movie Childs Play. Dolls just look creepy to me. *shutters at the thought*

I do not even like Barbie dolls.

How did you get into making dolls?

Love the card you made.  I'm glad you are feeling better!
A friend makes them, I started to go to class with her some years ago, then we decided to make our own at home, so we bought molds together, and slip, etc....she has gone on to sell her dolls at trade shows. It is alot of work, but very creative work. I have done babies, modern dolls, german dolls, boy dolls , jointed dolls, dolls, dolls, dolls, until I just lost interest....It is sad, I have alot of money and time invested and they are in boxes....I'll post pic later of a couple i have out....I am at the office right now, getting ready to go home.I make things with clay pots..the last thing I made was a bird table for a friend, will see if i can find the pic I took of it
a pot that i painted for my window sill
my bird table for my deck
Very nice Pin I like them both. Very artistic.
small doll is Molly
and the large doll is a German reproduction...I think she was called Mein Liebling
Used to love to play guitar and video games.  I also dearly loved to go atving on the weekend with friends in the spring, summer and fall.  Now, I can't do anything except sit around and reflect on days long past.  I think things are going to suck this year worse than last year.  It would be nice if I were wrong but I don't think I am this time.

By the way IO...how long does it take to make one of those?  Sorry if it was mentioned previously my memory is crap these days.

My we have some really talented people here! Hey Bob!

I use to play video games too. Not so much right now, but I still play a few games of football with hubby. I have not played my RPGs like DotHack, so much button pushing for that game, but I am hoping soon, I will get back to playing them again.

You might need to find another creative outlet or hobby for yourself, until things get straightened out? Maybe find something else you think you might like to dedicate your not so-much supply of energy to and that will hopefully not drain you of what energy you have left. Maybe take up building a website for yourself?

I know what it feels like to feel "useless". I mean we all go thru that when we are at our worst, but it does get better with time. Just have to not let it get you down too far. Which I know is hard.

I hope you find something else that will love to do just as much as the things you cannot do at this time, but will be able to do in the near future.

Many hugs to you.

Those are nicely creepy, OI. IO.. I have questions too about the dolls!!

I want to know how you learn to make them!!

I love dolls........
I cant believe you find dolls creepy Joonie...i know the chucky doll is but some dolls are really beautiful...Have you seen those life like ones...reborn I think they are called..Babs there is a website called bountifulbaby.com, you might be able to get more information there.

Hello,

First Thank You, second our Internet stopped working last night and I could not get online, Cable Company is coming TODAY to fix it, and I am at office right now.

Bob, it takes a lot of time, depending on the project about a month, I would usually have several going at a time. You pour a mold then the green ware sets and dries, then you hope you get it out without any cracks, then you clean the seams, and lightly sand, then you fire the green ware and "hope" it doesn’t crack, then you paint, fire paint fire, paint fire...Until you are satisfied. It takes a few weeks for the process. I would usually sew the bodies most are soft and start on the clothes sewing them to get them ready, and then you use wire and putty to balance and set eyes, stuff the bodies. It is truly a process.

I have made many babies; I loved sewing the long christening gowns. I agree the chunky doll, which is a German reproduction is not my favorite, but she is so large she is hard to store away. I have made over a 100 dolls.

Babs, A friend got me started with the Sydney dolls, they were vinyl, I loved sewing the outfits, you pick out hair and eye lashes etc...Then we found a class that started us on the porcelain dolls. It is an art. One that takes patience and a steady hand. My hands are not as steady, and I felt my work was not up to par, so I stopped. I still like to sew when I get a project that interests me. I have another old time Jenny doll done in white porcelain and painted hair. I will post later.

ok, the reborns are the FREAKIEST of them all!

I came across them on eBay one time, when I did not know what the word OOAK ment, and man I almost felt sick. I know they take a lot of work and talent and all, but to me they are just freaky looking. Some looking like they are "dead" babies.

When I first saw one on eBay I just kept thinking... how awful it would be to open a box with a life-like baby in it. Would you know for sure that it was a doll and not a really baby someone was pawning off on you? That is how my mind works.

Or can you imagine being a postal worker and the box that you decide to inspect is a box with one of them reborn babies in it?! I bet most would faint, as they do look so real and you would think it was a real baby.

They get the money they should for all work that goes into them. I am not judging anyone for creating them or even owning a slew of them. I am happy that you are supporting someone else's hobby and passion. I would hope people who do the same for me if I ever decided my talent was good enough to bring in the bucks!

I saw them on ebay too Joonie...I love ebay...theres some nice jewelry on there too

I scrapbook, I like to paint   walls, furniture,  not pictures) I refinish furniture, I cook, I read, I love to sew and I also make real copper foiled stained glass. Most of my glass runs about 24 X 12.. suitable for hanging in a window etc.

I havent done any glass work in quite a while, both because of pain and the fact that I have tiny kids around and  dont have big enough chunks of time. When Jakie goes to school I will get back to it.

if you go here you can see the huge murals I did for Jakies room. Also some of my scrapbook layouts..
OMG I just looked at a reborn baby on EBay.. It is stunningly gorgeous and yet gave me a first class case of the willies.. oooook..
This is D Day......

His murals really were a labor of love. right now I am working on his sister's murals; several dragons, and a castle. its fun..

I will get some photos of my glass. I've given away many pieces, but I will get some pictures of the ones I do have

I have a couple in windows, but I also have single pieces of glass sitting on the buffet as knick nacks, art objects  whatever.. they are just too pretty to put away in my storage area.

Very Nice murals, Kathy! A lot of work and time had there.

My room, is still half painted, and I have been living in the new house for 2 years now. I feel like a flunky kathy!!  those are wonderful paintings... I'm sure the kids feel very special!!
I scrapbook, I like to paint   walls, furniture,  not pictures) I refinish furniture, I cook, I read, I love to sew and I also make real copper foiled stained glass. Kathy I really liked your murals!!! I have been wanting to try this technique with the projector. I love painting walls and any kind of papering. I have also tried tissue paper on walls. would love to see your stained glass.
http://www.scrapbook.com/galleries/351335/view/1916131/-1/0/1.html

These are some things I've done.  headboard is made from cabinet fronts, with a table runner filled with tissue paper. silver wall and bedroom wall are tissue paper.
wow! I am amazed, many talents here.
I used to make corn husk dolls. I live next to cornfields and I went to an old settlement type park and this old couple was making them. Theirs were crud like they used to make for real. I glitzed mine up with doll hair and lace, ribbons, etc. I have made about 30 some angels and sold them. I also made several sets of a pilgrim woman and indian woman for Thanksgiving. I gave a bunch away and realized I don't have any for myself. I can't do it anymore. It's a lot of work. I would cut the husk away from the corn soak it in bleach or dye and work with it when it was damp. +After that it would take about 8 hours to do the rest.
I also like to paint. I started a mural in the nursery at the church I attend about five years ago of Noah's ark. I covers the whole room..one wall has the rainbow, another the ark, and the rest will be animals one day. I was thinking the other day about taking tape and wrapping my paint brushes to make them wider and easier to hold. I would so love to finish that project.
Jan Lee, I LOVE the tissue paper walls, and headboard, AND the button mirror.. they are so pretty!!

Joonie. We have lived in this house 23 YEARS and this is only the 2nd time I have painted ANY rooms here, and I still haven't painted the MBR or the florescent pink dining room.. we've painted 2 bedrooms, the front  hall and the kitchen once.. thats IT.
