red, hot painful joints | Arthritis Information

Enough already. Instead of getting better since I went back on the MTX it's getting worse. Now my knuckles on my hand and some on the finger knuckles are the description above. The swelling and redness is on the inside of some of the finger knuckles- is that weird? The swelling is not intense but enough that I had to remove my rings. The worst joint is my left thumb. It is the most painful and hot and looks like it has a bunion.
I take another dose of MTX tomorrow. I am so tempted to go up to the 8 pills but my RD had said go back on the regular dose for 2 weeks first. Otherwise we won't know if I really need the 8 or if I was in a flare.
Meanwhile we have something upper respiratory going on in this house. My husband's chest is whistling. I sure hope I don't catch anything and have to go off the MTX again. It does have to be something that  causes a fever right?
I think if you need an antibiotic for it then you're supposed to stop the mtx.  You've been off the mtx for about three weeks right?  I think it might take a while for it to become effective again.  My joints never really got red, but man do they get hot and swollen.  The thing on your thumb might very well be a rheumatoid nodule.  I tend to get them in my right wrist although I do have a nasty one on the inside of my ledt ankle now.  It also feels like someone implanted a golf ball into the sole of that foot when I stand.  Not terribly painful, I can just feel it there and it bugs me.   Try to hang on the mtx will kick in again soon...stay out of the pred as much as you can.

I'm on a two week course of doxycycline now for my chronic sinusitis and was told to come back just before the rx was gone to see if the doc wants to extend it out to 21 days or more to get rid of this once and for all.

Bob
Sorry to hear about your suffering, WTBRAF. My left thumb was exactly as you described and seemed to get better once the meds (imuran) kicked in. I agree with Bob though, I think it will take a while for the MTX to kick back in. Hopefully that will happen more sooner than later. Sending wishes for comfort your way. No, I don't think it sounds weird.  My hands did that about 5 years ago and they have been bothering me exer since.  It started with a second attempt at MTX.  My rd at the time told me I would be the one to react to mtx.  I was clueless mtx could do that. I sat there thinking reacting to mtx.  She reduced my dosage. but the MTX brought on nodules on the finger knuckles (PIP joints). my hands became worse after that and I eventually had to stop wearing all rings.  I wore my wedding ring on a necklace for a little while. then no wedding ring at all.
I would mention it to the doctor as soon as you can. maybe something they can do., especially with the upper respiratory symptoms in the house.
Umm...would it be possible to make the husband sleep in the garage?  I always tell my wife I'm going to make her go sleep in the basement with the dogs.

I think so. it is the second or middle joint on each finger (called PIP joint). Maybe we are not talking about the same things. but blister-like nodules appeared on them while on the mtx. the doctor said it was from the mtx. I don't think it is common but the first thing I thought of based on your description.

I hope it isn't that and passes soon. take care.
wantto... I think you're feeling the ramifications of having to stop the MTX and that once you have had a few doses the MTX will begin to work..... it takes time....

Sorry you're in pain..
sorry to hear of your pain wannabe. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Much hugs to ya!
No extra vitamin C but I survived the night of someone coughing into the air with no regard and woke up still well.

I am about to take my MTX. Hurray!

yesterday joints felt better wrapped. Today they are too tender. A little more swelling and redness.

My inside bump is in the joint discussed but not blister like. Just red and like the bunion thumb only smaller.

Thanks for all the well wishes.
Hi Wanna,

I know what you are going through.  I was three weeks off of my MTX and my enbrel.  My hands were swelling badly and I couldn't get my feet in my shoes.  It was awful, not to mention the pain increasing daily.  I am finally back on my medications and I believe it is slowly kicking in.  I can actually put my feet in my shoes (Yipee) and my rings are no longer cutting off my circulation.  The pain is better controlled as well.  Good luck and I'm sorry you are struggling. Wanttobe-How are you doing?  MTX kick in yet? Laoh sweetie, I'm sorry you are feeling yucky again. Keep that hubby of yours away from you. He should be sleeping in another room out of kindness, if for no other reason. I hope you miss this illness...

Take care and get as much rest as you can and get someone to help you sanitize your house including door nobs, remote controls, etc.

Deb
Thanks for asking about me! I am feeling a little bit better today but still need my hands wrapped to work all day. I took my 2nd does of MTX yesterday!

My husband ha!

He's been coughing all over the place without covering his mouth. It's been driving me nuts. Finally last night I said I don't mean to be rude but do you think you could cover your mouth? He looked at me angrily at  the gall of my asking when he is so sick with his man cold. I said I really shouldn't catch anything! Well I am hardly even able to cough!  he yelled. I was like OK.  In my head I'm thinking...Now you see my hands wrapped up from the result of having  been off the MTX for 3 weeks. If I go off again and get in a big flare maybe you'll need to feed me again like last year... Pick your poison.
However he did start covering his mouth and when he went to bed I used a can of lysol spray on every surface of the house. So far Miss Super Immunity woman is well!
Humm... maybe you will not get sick because your flaring? I never get sick, especially when my RA is the least bit active. So... maybe your immune system is not that surpressed and you will not get sick. Just a thought.

Hope the MTX kicks in soon! and your hubby gets better really soon!
pick your poison is RIGHT!

let me at 'im!!  *wink*
Yeah-I had to ask my Dad to cover his mouth when coughing over the holidays.  He got really sick.  I'm just amazed how a person with a master's degree would just spew germs in every direction!  He knows about my immunosuppressants too.  My kids were hysterical, nobody would sit next to him at meals!
