My 15 year old son who is a dancer, and guitarist was diagnosed with Juvenile spondyloarthritis last week by Dr. Lehman at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and was diagnosed with kyphoscoliosis the month previously. He is having trouble coping with his pain although we believe his new med,  Relafin is starting to kick in.  He was an athlete, a dancer who has been offered all sorts of things and won dance and karate competitions. This is all very devastating  BUT his  MD believes with the right meds these kids can return to their activities...My son's last MD said it might be "all in your head"!  I caught have screamed, but he works with my husband and didn't want to cause problems for my husband at work. Needless to say we WILL NOT be seeing this MD EVER again. My son was told so many times this was growing pains...and the first thing we saw upon entering his rheumatologist's office was a poster of the front page of his new booko, "It's not just growing pains".  !!!!  We knew we were in the right place! We were told there might be flare ups  that can be controlled from time to time.  It is important to make my son does not become obsessed with avoiding pain...as he was beginning to fear even playing guitar would cause pain in his wrist too...he has begun to swim and that helped his psychological state...and is in physical therapy. Extremely happy with MD...took several MD visits until we found out what this was, but his Rheumatologist figured it out by careful exam.
