Sinus rinse using silver | Arthritis Information

I was just poking around online and came upon someone talking about using colloidal silver from a health food store as part of an antibacterial sinus rinse recommended by their doc.  I'm curious if anyone here may have tried this and how did it work out for you?  They claim that it's not harmful so I might give it a shot and see what happens.  Sort of be the AI guinea pig if no-one else has tried it.

thats probably not a real good idea...colliodal silver is not without side effects and does interact with medications and you are already on some powerful meds.

I'd run a search for counterindications and side effects with your current meds and see what pops up.

Colloidal silver is antimicrobial - but take enough of it and you can Smurf out.  Search the Blue Man and you can see.  He liked it so much he didn't care - wonder what he had that made him think Blue was better than the disease?

Pip who thinks Neti Pot is a better option
Bob, don't even consider c. silver with the meds you're on.  Go for the Neti Pot like Pip suggested.  Lindy [QUOTE=bob_h76]I was just poking around online and came upon someone talking about using colloidal silver from a health food store as part of an antibacterial sinus rinse recommended by their doc.  I'm curious if anyone here may have tried this and how did it work out for you?  They claim that it's not harmful so I might give it a shot and see what happens.  Sort of be the AI guinea pig if no-one else has tried it.
Sorry to sound like I'm being disagreeable with all of you.  You're all right, I shouldn't be trying anything like this with the meds I'm on.  I just want relief from the RA so bad now, it's been 8 months and I can't do anything except sit around and watch life go by every day.  I should have enjoyed my remission more because that's all a thing of the past now as long as I have all these sinus problems.  Maybe prednisone will have to be my maintenance drug.

I didn't think you were being disagreeable at all.  I just don't want to see you damage the lining of your sinuses and nasal passages - that could lead to all sorts of problems.   Hey Bob, I'm having another one of my sleepless nights.  I'm not going to tell you anything you have not already heard.  Well, maybe just a few things.  I have been feeling a bunch of the old life passing by your window and all you can do is try to keep the window clean thing.  It sucks hard core and add feeling rotten on top of it... well, it just sucks!  I know its all platitudes but give yourself some time.  I know you have already and are doing all the right things, but give yourself a little more time.  We will all be here for you and screaming with you.

Bob...don't forget that a virus can make you feel just as bad and bacteria.  I also still feel like dirt sinus wise and the ENT did a culture-no bacterial infection at this time.  No surprise since I had been on antibiotics forever at that point.  I just have what the ENT calls a "blockage" on the left side. Don't have time right now to get that blockage removed.   Fun.

Do you take a sterioidal nasal spray?  If not, I am surprised.  ENT assured me that they do not have any longterm side effects like the oral ones.  He has toddler patients who use it.  Anyway, just enough steriod do reduce inflammation in the sinuses.  Now, he did say if you overuse it, you could see side effects.  But really, why would you spray stuff up your nose anymore then you have too??  He also mentioned Afrin saline.
Bob, you don't want to become a blue man. don't do it. I agree.. don't do it... unless you want to be a member of the blue man group

I truly feel for you...  I hope you can find an ENT that "hears" you.
Bob,

What has your ENT tried?

I had sinus infections a lot, but even when I didn't have infections, I had sinus pain and pressure.  Swelling from allergies could also be causing your problems too, not just viral or bacterial infections.

My journey included antibiotics, antihistamines, antihistamines with decongestants, corticosteroid spray, antihistamine nasal spray, nasal washes, allergy shots, and finally Turbinectomy and Septoplasty.

If you indeed have an infection or even an allergy, the nasal washes will help your body fight them.  It will also help remove any irritants.  As you probably read in other posts, I highly recommend this.

Don't try the silver.  I know they say that the colloidal silver thats out now won't turn you blue, but do you really want to risk it?

I already have nearly no sense of smell from a terrible sinus infection many years ago and a doc that didn't bother to tell me not to take MTX with an infection.  I went through many courses of antibiotics before I finally found this site and the info about not taking MTX with infections.  Wouldn't you know it?  I stop the MTX, start an rx of cipro...within a week no more sinus infection.  Who would have thought that?

I don't think I'll try the colloidal silver thing at all.  I have tried claritin-d, as well as many other otc decongestants to not much success.  Also have had Patanase for a while, not much good, same for flonase.  The saline washes seem to make my nasal passages inflamed for some reason I don't know why.  The ENT said it does this to some people he doesn't know why.

Hey blue isn't so bad...I could always change my name to Poppa Smurf.
Bob
You may have already addressed this, but does your ENT suggest surgery?  My allergist didn't, but my ENT did.  I had it because I was so tired of the pain.  I'm glad I finally had it done.  The outcome was well worth the few days of misery. He said he wanted to keep me out of the OR if possible.  The steroids, coupled with the last few months of inactivity have left me in not such great shape.  In short, if I had to have surgery right now I might be in for a long and possibly complicated recovery.  I'll see the allergist next week for RAST testing.  We'll see what comes of that, though as previously mentioned the ENT said he would test me but can't treat me because of my other meds.  (says Coreg interferes somehow)
