Physical and Occupational Therapy for RA | Arthritis Information

Rheumatoid arthritis treatment often includes physical therapy and/or occupational therapy.

Healthy joints are the "hinges" that let us move around and function every day. Many of us take that for granted. But if your joints are affected by rheumatoid arthritis, these simple movements aren't always automatic or easy.

It's possible for joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis to be too painful and damaged to use fully. Your treatment team will include a rheumatologist and others.

The goals and treatments used by physical therapists and occupational therapists sometimes overlap, but there are some general differences.

Physical Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Physical therapy has one simple goal: keeping you moving. It will stimulate muscles, bones, and joints through exercise or other methods. The result is more strength, tone, and overall fitness.

Physical therapists help you with joint function, muscle strength, and fitness level. They understand the mechanics of bones, joints, and muscles working together, the problems that can occur, and what to do about them.

Working with a physical therapist is a good idea at any stage or severity of rheumatoid arthritis.

Together, you and your physical therapist will create a road map of improvement for each muscle/joint group, and for your overall fitness. This will become part of the treatment plan for your rheumatoid arthritis. There are a number of strategies your physical therapist can use to reach your treatment goals.

Occupational Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Occupational therapists specialize in maximizing your independence. They can assess your ability to perform the activities of daily living. If doing routine things around the house or at work has become harder, an occupational therapist can probably help. They have many tools at their disposal.

It really is a crying shame that these services are so limited by insurance companies. I agree wholeheartedly!  PT has done so much to keep me flexible and mobile  It has reduced the pain I have from AVN and the damage from RA.
  My PT is constantly coming up with suggestions for pain management, in fact they were the one who suggested I get a TENS unit for my hip....
I have been doing PT off and on for about 3 yrs. now.  My PT and I have actually become good friends.  Funny-I am actually about to leave for a party at her house :)
 
Anyway, she has helped me a ton.  I have gone for various reasons-jaw, chest wall, knees, shoulder....
 
It is hard with insurance.  Luckily, the main health provider here issues a card like a credit card.  Everything goes on that and then I can make monthly payments.  The balance does rise quickly though.

I've also become good friends with my PT 
 
I have pretty good health insurance, but I'm limited to 50 visits.  This year I used the health saving account to apy for some of my PT.  It was well worth it!

When I asked my RD if I should be in therapy many months ago she said no not yet.  Meanwhile my left ankle is FUBAR now and so is my right wrist.  Can my PCP send me to physical therapy because the muscles in my arms, shoulders, and legs are just shot from inactivity and prednisone?

YES!  Go for it I stopped the PT for my hands before the holidays and will probably start up again after next RD visit.. I want a more blanketed RX for it though.. I have more areas that need addressing than just my hands/wrists...  I need an overhaul!!  LOL

I have them working on my hip and my shoulders for now.  I also need to check in with the hand therapist.  I've been kind of lax about doing the exercises of late and it shows....
my PT said that I needed to work at my "core strength".. shoulders ...back.. hips.. to strengthen there and thereby work a good sound base to help me .......  that's why I need a new RX. 
I do try to at least do my stretches on my hands and wrists.. though we were never able to get my right wrist's ROM back...  :(

why do you need a script to just work on strengthening?  thats something you should be able to do at home or i nyour gym...and when you work your core a major target needs to be your abs since that is where all stabalization comes from

check with your rheumatologist again...there may be a reason she felt you weren't ready for PT yet
Swimming is a great way to exercise. Check with your local Y. I will admit, since I have been sick I have only gone once or twice.
It took me all morning today just to get moving, teeth brushed, shower etc.
I feel like my meds will never start working, I am getting a little scared. I am feeling down this morning.
 
 I would like to start back to church, my husband use to go with me, then he stopped and I followed a year later. He has expressed an interest to return to church, I want to go, but I need to feel better.
buckeye.. If I don't have someone telling me what to do..... and paying for it.... I probably won't do it as often as I should.. takes alot to even get me to do it......   IDK.. I'll see what I can do for myself ..getting a book or something about it.....
 
know where I can get the "want to" ??  I know I need to... but I don't want to... makes me too tired..... catch 22 .....

why don't you try a personal trainer a good one can get you started and keep you on target.  Look for one who specializes in rehab training which is for people who aren't ready to be on their own but are past needing physical therapyYes.. That's a good idea... I cannot have someone who is going to push me so hard that I'm hurt again....  but to show me what I need to do to actually be advantageous to help myself against this disease ........
