Why is my doctor telling me I can't take my MTX just because of a cold?

I told him I don't have a fever.

Do you think digital thermometers register lower temperatures? Mine is only 96.1

what.. you can't take your MTX because of a cold?? do you have a history of bad chest colds??

I have a cold.. a doozy..and I took my MTX yesterday......  I was told never to not take it unless he said... the only I do is w/ infection.. no enbrel.. w/ fever.. he wants a call.. w/ fever and shaking chills.. I better be calling from the ER.....

I know you want your MTX   fight him on it......

Is he standing there holding the pill bottle?

Its YOUR body.. Take the MTX if you feel ok.
That is strange. When I had the flu, I asked my dr. if I should stop my Plaquenil. She said Plaquenil isn't as strong of an immune suppressent as some others, so not to stop Plaquenil, but others that are more strong sometimes they have to stop for a while until you start to get better because your immune system is supressed from the meds...but I've also read different things. Confusing , isn't it?

Methotrexate is an immune suppressent medication.  When I've had a cold my doctor has told me to hold MXT until we see how the cold develops.  Sometimes a cold will develop into a full blown URI, sinus infection, or pneumonia.  It won't hurt to wait a few days and see how the cold develops.  Granted I've only had 1 cold in the last few years but that was the advice that I was given and it made sense.  Lindy

I've never stopped my mtx when I've had a cold in the 17 years I've been taking it....never been told to either. Our doctors all seem to do things a little differently and personally I err on the side of caution.  Maybe my age makes me a little more cautious about the medications.  Any infection at age 63 isn't good, especially with RA complications.

I  believe that when it comes to medications and how they're prescribed should be between you and your doctor.  If your doctor says to not take, then don't take it.  If your doctor says you can continue, then do so.  Each of our bodies, additional health issues, complications, degree of severity is different.  You're not the same as I am, even though we have the same disease.  There are too many variables to make a blanket statement of to take or not to take.  None of us know how WTBF will react, but she and her doctor probably know.

I have a friend who had minor surgery and her doctors told her she had to stop Remicade a month before and not restart until a month after surgery.  My orthopedic and RD said I should stop dmards and biologics 2 weeks prior to a total knee replacement and I could restart 2 weeks post surgery.  A big difference in medication treatment between 2 people that go to doctors that took their rheumatology training at the same medical school.   The differences are amazing.  Lindy
The differences ARE amazing. They don't seem to have the same position on a lot of subjects! It does make you scratch your head. I agree that things should be between our doctors and ourselves or what we feel in the gut sometimes. I'm just wanting to get a feel for how others have been counseled and what they have done and what the outcome has been.
As much as I want to listen to my doctor...my RA seems to be feeling worse than this cold does (unless the aches are from the cold). Since I just went back on the MTX and really haven't started to feel better yet- I hate to miss another week.WTBF, I got so caught up in the differences that I didn't tell you that I hope you feel better soon.  I hate colds, they make you miserable for days and sometimes weeks.  Take care and stay warm.  LindyThanks Lin! Thanks Sno! You are probably right-about my irritation. I have a very low tolerance for sickness. This is my first cold in years! It really isn't bad at all- not at all like the man cold it was caught from- LOL!

I still don't have a fever. In fact at 96.1 I wonder if I'm dead.... I think if I feel better over the next couple of days I'm going to take my dose late.
