I saw my rheumy today and he gave me info on plaquenil and asked me to read about it and think about it. I go back in 2 weeks. Currently, I'm only on dolubid. I'm interested in hearing anyone's experiences with plaquenil. I'm fairly new to RA, and have OA in my lower back. Thank you. Love, Juliah

Hi Juliah,

I'm on Plaquenil and experience no side effects whatsoever. However, the first few weeks that I was on it, I went through a period of adjustment where I had some headaches and a few days of feeling nauseous. I'm not sure though if that was definitely tied to the Plaquenil. Anyway, my experience with Plaquenil has been good so far. (I've been on it for about 9 months now.)

P.S. It does taste a little bitter though, so be sure to take a big gulp of water!

Hi,

I have been on plaquenil for 3 years. I have had no side effects from it.  I make sure that I eat when I take it (I eat something whenever I take pills). You do need to have your eyes checked every 6 months. One of the uncommon side effects can be pressure in your eyes and glaucoma. All of my eye tests have been normal. It has really helped me. I hope that it works for you too. It does take awhile for it to help, so don't worry if it doesn't help right away.

Hello,

How long did it take for the drug to start working for you?? Once it started working your swelling in your joint stop and you are able to resume regular use?

Thanks,

JLE

Hi Juliah,

I've been on Plaquenil for about 24 years and have experienced no side effects. As I remember, it takes between 6 to 8 weeks before it starts to work. It is working for me but I'm also taking it with a myriad of other medication. Plaquenil does have a tendency to affect the eyes. Therefore, once you are on Plaquenil you will be required to have a complete eye exam by an opthamologist either yearly or every six months. Since I've been on it so long, I go to an opthamologist every six months and so far everything is just fine. Hope this helps and good luck.
I was on plaquenil for a bit of time.  I did not have any side effects that I remember.  But, I also don't think it helped me.  When I stopped taking it, I did not notice a change in how I felt.  I'm not sure if this was becasue MTX had kicked in or what.  I've found some docs forget to warn about the eye check.
