help sorting out the meds choices | Arthritis Information

It's time to move on from sulfasalazine but to what?  Do I add MTX, try Enbrel or what?  Is there any source that's good about comparing the pros and cons of all the meds out there?  I can research each one individually but it gets so confusing.  I'd love to find a somewhat objective, definitive source...Sulfasalazine and another DMARD work well together.  They sort of jump start one another.  Why start a biologic if you haven't taken other DMARDS?  MTX will be easier for you to take and have less side effects than a biologic.  I've been on MXT for several years with NO problems related to it's use.  The literature is starting to show that the best effects come from simultaneous DMARD use.  These are things you need to talk over with your RD.  Do a spread sheet for the DMARDS showing side effects, how well it works, etc.  Take the spread sheet to your next RD appt. and go over each of the DMARDs.

I haven't seen anything comparing DMARDS and biologics but that doesn't mean it's not out there.  I know it's a big step and confusing but keep researching.  Lindy
There's a really good flow chart out there...I will try to find it...

Look at the 2008 recommendations here: http://www.rheumatology.org/publications/guidelines/index.asp

It's a big article but there are some helpful flowcharts
KatieG2009-01-27 19:49:35I'm on Enbel and Arava w/ Pred and I can tell it makes a difference. The Enbrel I believe is responsible for my increased energy level...thank God!!! I found it hard to get the energy to do normal everyday tasks. Two days before Christmas I had an acute appendicitis and had to go off my meds for 3-4 weeks. Boy!!! Could I ever tell a difference!!! I had to bump my Pred to 15mg to get the pain and mobility somewhat under control. MTX did not work for me but I would try it before Enbrel and Arava. I wish you well...
