This article pretty much sums up the basics of HFCS.

Most children eat hot lunch at school. Very little of what the children eat is prepared the old-fashioned way and the bottom line is cost. The "bottom line" is what the people in control of all aspects of our children's education and meals is their primary concern.

My point is that the food offered the children is some of the most unhealthy food to be found. Alas, the info our children need to know/learn in regard to healthy eating choices, food preparation, etc. is skimmed over. More important to teach them how to cook using shortcuts, which tend to involve already prepared foods.

Anything you can purchase prepackaged you can prepare from scratch. Not all but a good many canned products, such as soups/stews, pasta products and a good many other products, can also be prepared from scratch.  This isn't cooking hints forum so methinks it's time for me to get down from my soap box!  *Hugs To All*
Cooking "from scratch" is definitely cheaper and better for you than buying processed crap.  I cook dinner from scratch almost every night, and a couple times a month I make a bunch of freezer meals for those nights when we're short on time.  I must be doing something right - my boys like to complain to my parents that they never get to go out to eat and that we never have junk food in the house. Jas: Way to go!! That's how we roll, too.  As for the soda I know I don't drink more than 12 cans a year.  Do love my coffee though!
