Tempurpedic bed, slippers? | Arthritis Information

Thinking about getting a Tempurpedic mattress, wondering if anyone owns one? They also have pillows and slippers ( which sound heavenly). I am hoping to find some advice good or bad before I invest. I know I can try it on a trial period, but that is not without a small investment of money and time. I am hoping that the mattress will ease my joints. Going to bed and getting up are so painful at times. ( like I need to tell any of you)

Thanks,

Tink

I HATE!!! our tempurpedic mattress.  HATE IT.  I wish we'd never spent so much money on it 'cause I want to trash it.  If you think you have trouble getting in and out of bed now, just wait until you try getting out of a tempurpedic in the middle of a flare.   It's like trying to get up off the hard floor from a prone position.   The mattress does not give at all.  No springs.  Just flat and hard.

We bought ours one month before my RA started (I sometimes wonder if the mattress brought in on, but know that's impossible), and once I began having those miserable all-nighters of pain, I realized I'd never, ever get used to the thing.  Can't tell you how many nights I slept in the recliner.

There may be others who love their tempurpedic, but oh, how I wish we went with the sleep number bed instead.
I to would like to know if anyone on this panel owns a Tempur-pedic matress.  I want to buy one this spring for my sleepless nights.  they are approved by the Arthritis Foundation it is sewn into the matress.  They are really expensive but I say for a good nights sleep I'm willing to put out he cash.  I have laided on two the Classic and the Deluxe I find those to meet my needs.  Hopefully tinkerbell someone will post something.

Good luck

Wow, thanks Nancy. I am worried about the huge investment. I don't want to hate it.

I have stayed in The Hampton Inn Hotels recently, they have a custom mattress designed for the hotel chain. I loved it my husband loved it. I have that in the running as an option, at least we have spent several nights on one together.

The mattress is called Hampton Bed by Serta.

Anyone try a Hampton Inn recently? Anyone LIKE the Tempurpedic?
As an interim solution, try a "memory" foam bed topper. I have a three inch Serta topper on an eighteen inch pillow top mattress. While the added height might be difficult for some to manage, it works well for me and I can simply sit on the top of the mattress/topper rather than having to sit "down". Rising from bed is also easier for me as I can stand instead of having to stand "up".

Additionally, I like the topper for its additional warm. I sleep cold and the density of the foam captures body warmth and hold it. I also have a set of memory foam pillows, recommended by a neurologist, that once I got used to sleeping on/with have proved beneficial to some ongoing cervical spine issues.

My sister gave me a pair of the slippers but I was unable to wear them as they do not provide any side-to-side support and I was concerned that I would step incorrectly and twist an ankle.

Good luck on finding a perfect sleep solution. I got my dad the slippers for Christmas one year. He has nerve damage in his foot so he always has to walk on something soft. He seem to like them.

As for the temp. We were also thinking about buying one and there are many different grade of foam you can get. The lady told us that it would take a while to get used to the  faom because it does feel very hard at first.
We tried out the sealy memory foam mattress and I liked it much better. It was much softer and just as much money but it still comes with a 20 year warranty which is great!
It is the only other matress out there (so far) that can compete with temp.

A mattress topper will not be the same as the actual mattress because it does not have the dense foam unerneath which will give to the topper.

We had a topper and it was worn out within a year.
I didn't care for the mattress when I tried it out in the store. However we did buy the tempurpedic pillows and we love them. It took a couple of weeks to get used. I can't sleep without it now. I used to get a lot of neck/shoulder aches. You know the kind that you get when you sleep "wrong". It was worth the 0 a piece price. They are 4 years old and still great.you can get shoes with those i think their brand name is soft walk or soft spot....as far as bed i just love my restonic bed, i don't know what it is made of but i like it better than the tempurpedic bed or toppers.I would not know about the temperpedics...

I highly recommend my sleep number bed....  it is heavenly to sleep on... no aches when I awake from pressure points... I can pump it up to HELP me get out of bed!!  yes.. you can change the firmness ... and you can get dual control to have separate settings from your spouse!

Babs a mattress dealer that didn't sell the sleep number bads scared me away from them. he says you have to clean the air chambers periodically. Is that true?We LOVE LOVE LOVE our Tempupedic. I have much better sleep, I CAN get out of it far easier than a regular coil mattress.  We've had ours about 3 years.

Mark is  much bigger than me and I never feel him roll over or get out of bed. also when the kidlets join us, as they often do, I never feel it.

We had no trouble getting used to it, not from night one. I would never give it up.

If you arent sure they DO allow you to return it within something like 90 days.

 YAYYYY Tempurpedic!!!
We bought the top of line tempurpedic bed about 7 years ago.  At first, I really liked it, that was before I got sick.  Just for the record, I don't have ra but they thought I did for several years, I have sarcoidosis.  I have a lot of the same symptoms as many of you and than some and the treatments are pretty close as well.

As I started to get sicker and sicker, I found the lowness of the bed to be problematic.  As my joints began to hurt more and more, I found it to be less comfortable as well.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I went and had a sleep study done.  They had a top of the line pillow top mattress and it was like Heaven to my body.  I literally fell asleep in 6 minutes, even with all the wires and crap hooked up to me!!!  Since than I have begged my husband to let us by a new pillow top or sleep number bed but we just can't afford it.  I looked for a king size pillow top mattress pad and couldn't find any real soft ones.  I now have 2 down comforters and three soft blankets doubled up on top of my side of the bed under the sheet!  This is more comfortable than the tempurpedic bed itself!

I think for some people they are really good.  My sore joints most definitely does not like it either!
I bought a swedish foam bed (is that the same as Tempurpedic??) and love it. It is firm at first but your body warmth slowly makes it soft and cozy. The only problem I have with it is that body indentations have formed in the mattress over time (you cannot flip this mattress).Swedish foam is the same as tempurpedic , which is Visco Elastic foam.
Alot of companies use this foam for the toppers of their spring mattresses.
We have one from Simmons Beauty Rest and just love it.
The foam forms to your body as you sleep , it works with the heat of your
body.
I was told if you have a Tempurpedic you have to use a special mattress pad
or the bed will get real warm through the night.

If you buy a tempurpedic bed and get the slightest indentations they will give you a new bed for up to 20 years same with sealy. Those are the ONLY foam bed I would buy. We also have another visco bed and it is not the same. Other company's just don't have the technology down like sealy and tempurpedic do. There are many grades and types of foam. (my hubby is an engineer and at his old job he made foam)

If you buy the more expensive tempurpedic they will not get as hot as the lower grade ones.
We do have the actual tempurpedic brand and it does have body impressions.  The 20 year warranty is PRORATED and the indentations have to be a certain depth.  We actually called the company about that warranty a  few years ago and were VERY disappointed.

Well that clears it up!

I will have to look into the logistics of TEMP return policy. I would like to try one. They have the adjustable options on the TEMP. A king size has individual sides you can adjust. I like that feature.

A sleep number is NOT for me or my DH. We stayed in a hotel that had them when we traveled for a funeral, the beds were miserable, although it could of been they had been used or abused in the hotel.

I do like the Hampton Inn mattress, probably because WE have slept on it for a few nights and loved it. I don't know. It is a big investment, a person spends a good amount of time in bed.

What I do know, it is time for a new bed. Height will be important.

I am in the market for a mattress too.  I wondered about the tempurpedic and the like but when I heard about the whole "body heat" thing, no, no, no.  I sleep sooo hot, it would be like being in an oven!  I sleep with a fan blowing on me in the dead of winter!  Thanks to all for the info, does anyone know about or have a water bed - one of the newer ones with baffles? Its been a LONG time since I have been on a water bed!  LOL!  I would wonder though if they would make you sleep hot as well though.  You have to keep the water inside heated and if you turn the water temp down too much the cold can cause more stiffness.

ohhhhhhhh water bed. We had one in our early years of marriage. I went through my first pregnancy sleeping in one. I loved it. But then that was SO long ago. Sigh...

The warmth would be nice. Getting up in the morning , problematic
I HATED those slippers.  The lack of support was the main problem.  The other thing was that after they were on for a little while they were mushed flat.  They recover after taking them off, but while wearing them they are useless.

Now I do love my UGG slippers.  Well worth the money.  I'd have to look up the style, they have several. La

I've never heard about people having those issues .. we have never.  I' open it every few months and air out the innards...  which amounts to taking the zipper all the way around and laying the top open..  I do that when I give my room a good cleaning...  just air it.. hard to explain, but the foam isn't the kind that holds moisture.. it's porous and it is only around the edges... My husband would Freak!! if we had mold.. he's Mr. Allergy-prone !!

I've done that at least 2x a year since I bought it in Jan 2000 ...... it is still exactly the same as it was the day I bought it..  not a difference.. no sag.. no lack of support..

I want to get another when I have a spare bedroom.. (whenYDD moves out LOL) and then I'll invite you to spend the night!!!  you can try for yourself..

Haven't read this entire thread.....but wanted to sing the praises of my sleep number bed also. WE bought the big buck adjustable king size one and it's the best money we've ever spent. I've enjoyed it everyday since I got it. I was iffy about spending the extra for the adjustable; but it was WELL worth the cost.

I use to have terrible trouble sleeping and would get up several times a night always in pain. I am happy to report that I sleep through the entire night and rarely if ever even get up to go to the bathroom.

I've never heard of that cleaning thing either.
I really want the adjustable bed. The Hampton Inn bed does not come in adjustable.
The Tempurpedic does. Thanks everyone.

I watch TV in my bed at night. It's about the only place in the house I can get comfortable sometimes. I highly recommend the adjustable no matter what bed you go with....although I love the sleep number. I have a friend that has a tempuredic though and loves it too.I really want the adjustable also Lovie, The Tempurpedic has a king bed that is split in the middle, when the bed is flat you can not tell there is a split. I like to read, watch tV and use my Laptop in bed , but I can not stay comfortable for long I use bed pillow and feather pillows tucked here and there, very tiresome adjusting and re-adjusting all the time.

I think the adjustable will help me to get out of bed on those mornigs that are difficult.
We are going to go back to the store this weekend, I am getting excited about having a new bed. I hope I can talk DH into the extra exspense of an adjustable, I'll have to have my best sells pitch ready My son has a Tempurpedic bed and he loves it.  I tried sleeping on it and I felt like someone beat me up.  It wasn't comfortable to me at all.  i have a select comfort and a tempurpedic both are queen size. the sleep number cost 00 the tempurpedic cost 00.i LOVE the sleep number ,but my wife did not.i moved the sleep number to the traval trailer and bought the tempurpedic.now we both hate the bed.the tempurpedic is the biggest pile of wasted money i have ever seen .we hurt so bad in the mornings we cant get out of the bed.we have taken advantage of the twenty year warranty and are on the second mattress, but its time too try to get another one because we are both sleepping in a pitWell I would really love some magic slippers. A magic bed would also be very nice. Just the thought to sleep with out pain. I would love to have slippers that felt like I was walking on clouds. It is really a wonderful fantasy. Just thinking about it makes me feel better.
