I met with my oral surgeon this week.  He and the rd and the pain dr. all agree--I need to fix the jaw.  So, I will be having bilateral surgery on the 18th.  Can't wait.  Gotta love RA.I'm sorry, rocckyd. I hope it at least relieves some problems.shoot... that's not fun.... sorry you need it... IF only it helps!!!  Damn, i hate to hear that! I too have arthritis in my jaw. My Rhuemy assurs me it will clear itself up, but i'm losing confidence in her real fast! Been 3 months now w/ little to no improvement. Hope it goes well for you. I wish you the best rocckyd. Certainly nothing anyone would choose to have but I'm hoping it's the answer to you problems when it's all said and done. Remind us again a few days before your surgery so we can send positive thoughts and prayers your way. My memory stinks.

wanttobeRAfree2009-01-29 17:56:20Thanks guys.  At least they don't wire the jaw shut anymore.  The worst is having to miss close to 2 weeks of work.  I have NO sick days due to the Orencia infusions.  But-it will be worth it if it works.  The plan is to fix the jaw and hopefully that will improve the neck and chest wall inflammation as well.  The muscles are so strong and connected in those areas that the other issues can't be worked on until the jaw is fixed.

So sorry you have to have surgery, Rebecca...hoping it all goes well for you!

Well, sorry to hear about the surgery, but think about a great outcome and getting some relief.  I don't know if you need to lose weight, but I bet if you do need to, you won't want to eat, so this surgery might have an upside!  LOLI had to have my left jaw redone 14 yrs ago due to arthritis.
back then they used part of my rib for the bone in the jaw then a skin graft on my leg for the padding in the joint.  Had my mouth wired shut for 6 weeks.

They used the jaw because they said your body is less likely to reject your own bone.  Funny now they don't use a rib graft anymore at all.

Yes it was for the better.  Major improvment like 2 months later.

Good luck to you.
Hope you have a Smoothie King near you! One of my staff had bilateral jaw surgery earlier this year for TNJ, which is probably a little different. It took her about 2 weeks of recovery and she was in great shape afterwards, other than the liquid diet. Good luck and get lots of rest. Hi Rocky, thinking of you and praying for a quick successful recovery, all the best, Janie. Rebecca, I really admire your attitude about all this, you really seem to have your head in the right place.  I sincerely hope things go smoothly for you and surely, you will have a positive outcome.  Please let us all know how you are holding up before surgery and if you need moral support.  And pretty please let us know how you are doing as soon as you feel able after surgery.  Best wishes to you and positive energy your way.

Rebecca, my sympathy and my congratulations on dealing with your problem. I share this difficulty to a lesser degree, and can foresee the day when I will have to do something about mine. My doctor also said that the RA meds might help my minor (in comparison) problems of being unable to open my mouth very far, pain pain pain, grinding teeth, TMD, and I just noticed a big lump on the jaw hinge on one side.

Geez, what to do first? See someone for the jaw or the vision problems? Sometimes I feel paralyzed! You are moving forward and taking care of this with admirable dispatch. Please do remind us when you have the surgery.
