Darrach Procedure | Arthritis Information

Have any of you had this procedure?  My mom had it 3 weeks ago and she feels she isn't recovering fast enough.  I "googled" the procedure but can't find any articles indicating a normal recovery time.  Would anyone care to share their personal experience? I have had ulnar resections of both wrists. The first when I was about 33 years old, recovery was 8-12 weeks. The second was at about 60 years of age and the recovery time was almost double.

Both resections provided pain relief, strength and motion, however I am not sure there is any normal recovery time, from my experience age, debility, and expectation need to be considered.

FWIW.

Has the surgeon made any predictions re: your mother's progress?

I know that I expected to be "better" immediately and suffered some emotional distress when the recovery aspect was, from my point of view, much to long.

Best wishes to you and to your mother!
Hope your mom feels better soon kweenb!  I am sorry to hear about your mom's recovery issues, Kweenb.  Tell her not to push things too far to fast.  Her body may just be telling her it needs more time.   I had one on my right wrist in early 2007.  The actual recovery of the surgery  itself was 3-4 weeks but it took about 3 months to be able  to comfortably use the wrist.  now the wrist was autofused for many years prior to the surgery and I had my rt elbow replaced 3 months before the wrist surgery.  I had the wrist surgery mainly because the way my hand was positioned it was causing my elbow pain.  So that 3 month rehab time also included the continued rehab on the elbow

Someone in my mom surgeon's office told my mom on the phone that she shouldn't be hurting after two weeks and didn't want to give her any more pain pills.  Then when she saw the surgeon at three weeks post op, he was furious that someone told her that.  He told her that he just cut some bone out of her arm and that she was going to hurt for a while.  She just has it in her head that she should be fine now.  I guess she felt that surgery on her wrist wouldn't nearly be as bad as her back surgeries.

Since we didn't know anyone that had this surgery, I told her I'd ask you fine people.  I knew someone would be knowledgeable on this.  I told my mom of your responses and now she feels better about the fact that she still hurts.

Thanks, again.  You guys are always so helpful.

Two weeks is barely enough time to begin to adjust to the process, let alone be removed from pain. I am so sorry your Mother had to bear both the pain of the procedure and the insensitivity of being told that she should not be experiencing what she obviously was...

Bone pain is never trivial. Never.

Someone in my mom surgeon's office told my mom on the phone that she shouldn't be hurting after two weeks and didn't want to give her any more pain pills.
This whole ordeal has been a nightmare.  I'm ashamed to say I got mad at the people in the pharmacy and actually yelled at them.  When we finally got the script for her pain medication, the Kroger pharmacy wasn't going to fill it because they said my mom had to come in with her drivers license.  I got mad because they knew she just had surgery and they allowed me to pick up her script the evening after her surgery and now they want me to drag her out of the house?  After I yelled, they told me not to worry about it and gave me her drugs.  I think they could tell I was at the end of my rope with them and the doc's office.
