Methotrex and alcohol | Arthritis Information

i know you are all going to start shouting ...... but does anyone have the odd glass of wine while on Methotrexate?
Surely its ok to say have 2 glasses on the weekend? I am AWARE of all the liver problems and terrified to go near the stuff but for heavens sake its CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I'll admit to it.  I've gone through several rheumys and had several different "rules" told to me about alcohol.  My latest rheumy is of the opinion that a glass of wine a week will not do any damage, but to not drink the day before, day of, or day after my mtx.  And KEEP UP ON MY BLOOD TESTS.

That said, I'm 22 years old, from Sonoma County, and have a taste for good red wine.  I don't drink anything but wine and I rarely have more than a glass at a time.  I don't always stick to the glass a week rule though.  I'm very very very cautious about my blood tests, but they've always come back okay so far.

I think there a little over the top if you ask me.

Cathy...Enjoy your Holiday Spirits!! Not all doctors think it's a crime.

OF COARSE THIS IS MY OPINION....don't shoot me. I too have heard all the warnings.

You probably don't have arthritis!

When I was on MTX, I  drank wine.........probably a lot more than I told my RD! *wink*

Ummmmmm I lived and as far as I know my liver is fine. The thing is I do know that it is bad/not recommended to drink alcohol while on MTX.

So many may wonder why I drank wine While taking MTX?!? It helped with the pain and tasted ohhhhh soooo good!

sil

I'm with you Sil.

To be honest....the people I know that have had liver problems never touched a drop of alcohol. Explain that one to me.

I'm not puching anyone to drink...but I think the warnings are so blown up. I don't think it's nearly as big of a deal as you hear some claim.

Hi -

First of all let me say hello again - I am newly returned to the board after more than a year away.

I've been on methotrexate (also on Humira 1/week) for about 2 years now and I still drink.  I try not to get too crazy and stick to just beer or wine - none of the hard stuff.  I do the blood tests every 3 months and so far no problems.

The way I look at it is that this damn disease has changed my life enough already, I'm not going to let it take away all of my fun!

I feel the same way, Di!

To me its not worth it... I skipped the MTX when we went on our cruise so I could have a fru fru drink... I had 1 then switched to virgin drinks.  I have not had an alcoholic drink since Feb, and I never drank more than 1 drink a month or so anyway..

So what happens? I have elevated liver enzymes anyway..sheesh

Well, the first 7 months I followed the one glass a week rule, then said forget it.  Life's too short.  I drink my wine and no problems.  Guess I'd rather cut a few years off and enjoy if I have too!

Susan

I have been on MTX for 18 months.  i did not drink for the 1st 6 months, but now do, and more than i tell my RD.

I have had no issues with my blood tests.

If i get issues with the blood i will have to re-evaluate BUT my thoughts are:

I have a huge amount of stress in my life, dealing with the disease, worrying about getting/holding down a job, what will i be like in 5 years? and having a drink helps me handle the stress, so i will continue to have a drink.

does anybody know see I stopped taking the metho because it was causing me more pain then taking it away.  So he put me on arava, lodine, celebrex, and plaquenil with the other meds is it a higher risk to have a drink?

I am not on this medication...on azuflidine (week 10, no progress yet), but i just wanted to say that i find in general, alcohol makes me stiffer and hurt more. Again, I am diagnosed with sponydloarthropathy, not RA, but does anyone else find this to be the case when you drink alcohol? I am not a wine drinker, b ut love a vodka-tonic every now and then.

Nyali...yes, that happens with me as well.  I don't drink regularly, but I will during special occasions or when we get together with friends.  So maybe once a month I'll have a few glasses of wine.  The following day I'm always very stiff and sore.  Usually last for most of then day then it goes away.
