I need some help. I have been having left calf pain for a few days now, not bad, just a mild throbbing, especially at night. Today, my calf is swollen and also that ankle is slightly swollen. I have had this severe hip pain for several months that just will not let up. The pain is in my groin as well as the outside of the hip. I can no longer sit on the floor or sit with my legs dangling as it puts me in too much pain. I am unable to lay on the left side at night as it is too painful to sleep on the sore hip. I don't really have a risk for DVT except that I did have surgery on Dec. 23rd but that is a long time ago, in my estimation. My question, can my entire leg swell with bursitis? or osteoarthritis? Or what ever this hip thing is? I have an appt with my new rheumy and I was going to bring all this up with her on Friday but I'm wondering if I should go have this calf pain checked out sooner. I just hate going to the ER today. I feel like a hypochondriac, LOL.Geez Lori, go to ER, immediately.
Geez Lori, go to ER, immediately.
I agree... hopefully it's nothing potentially life or limb-threatening, but you never know.  Better to waste an afternoon in the ER than to risk permanent damage or worse. No Lev, I already checked into that and its not. I'm just hoping someone on here has had hip bursitis and can give me some info on it.My calves always feel swollen and I have bursitis.

BUT...with DVT, just go get it checked out, ASAP.  At minimum you'll get someone else's opinion as to what is going on.  I realize there's a cost but your life is worth more!

If you are dead set against the ER, do you have a minute clinic or something?  I don't know if there's any sort of test though, I think they have to do ultrasound to find it?  That's not too expensive in any event.
Or rather than the ER-call your doctors office and ask to have the dr. call you back.  Describe the symtoms and let the dr decide if tje ER is the correct place to go.  If they don't admit you, the ER is very expensive--insurance doesn't cover much and they are extremely slow.  I'm w/ catnip at the very least... an emergency call to the dr would alleviate your fears perhaps..

HOpefully it's nothing.
Hi Lori, I've had hip bursitis in the past and have had both bursas injected.  The area of pain is on the outside of the hip, below the hip joint and down a few inches.  The bursa sac is inflammed.  It will cause pain in the hip joint and down the thigh but it shouldn't be causing pain or swelling in the leg calf.  Sounds like 2 different issues and if I had calf swelling and pain I'd be off to the ER.  I wasn't a risk for a pulmonary emboli either but I had not one but three.  Go to the ER.  LindyWell, I'm off to the ER. Didn't want to spend my health care dollars this way but I'll sleep better tonight knowing I got it checked out. May as well get this hip xrayed to see what is going on. Probably all in my head. I'll let you know. Thanks fer yer help guys. Glad you're going to the ER...Certainly doesn't sound like it's all in your head.  Hope it's nothing too serious.

You could definetaly have two diffrent things going on. Good thing you are getting it checked out. I'll check back for a report.

Is the pain from hip bursitis a sharp burning pain? I have been having pain in the outside of my hip, just below the join that runs about 1/2 way down to my knee. If I don't move it and can stay still, it will quit hurting but if I move around much it starts to hurt really bad. Does this sound like it could be bursitisLorester,
Both my hips are that way and have been for some time.  They don't say much about that part but when you have calf pain and ankle swelling the docs become concerned.
You hate to sound like a hypochondriac and I hate to alarm you but I have experienced that type of pain and it has always caused the ER docs concern. The good news is mine were false alarms but I am glad they check it out for me.  Better safe than sorry.

Don't fool around- please get it checked out and let us know how you made out. Best wishes that it's nothing serious. well... what did the ER say? Inquiring minds want to know!  Could be she is in the hospital, sleeping, or busy?Hellllllllllllllo, where are you?  Lok, I didn't go. Several reasons. I think I have this thing figured out but I still need to go in on Friday and get to the bottom of it. Two weeks ago, I had to buy a new pair of nursing shoes so I bought MBT's. Not sure how I feel about them yet. My left hip has done nothing but throb since I put them on. I really think they created a flare. My leg is still swollen but does not hurt as bad since I have not worn them for 24 hours. I'm not sure I can wear these things but I spent so blasted much money on them, plus I wore a hole in my keens so I have no other shoes to wear. I have heard so many goo things about the MBT's that I feel I need to wear them longer. If any of you wear MBT's, any advice is more than appreciated.

The other reason, we had to go to Wyoming last weekend and move my MIL up here with us. She has early stages of dementia and her neighbors were calling us, concerned for her safety. So last night, around the time I was heading out, she had a total meltdown. She is so upset about being taken from her home and brought to another state, so I stayed to help calm her fears and so far today, she is ok. But, I cannot leave her long enough to go spend two hours at the doctor. It will have to wait. I do feel ok and highly doubt it is a DVT. I'll keep you posted.I have 2 pair MBT's.  You definitely need to get used to wearing them - they force you to walk in a different way, and you use muscles (especially in the calves) in ways that you don't usually do.  Get a second pair of shoes.  Wear the MBT's for a few hours, then put on the other shoes.  Get used to them.

Glad you're more-or-less OK. Hope it is just the new shoes...sorry to hear about your mother in law- dementia is a tough thing to contend with. Best of luck, well wishes that you will be able to keep patience.

sorry to hear about your MIL.

I hope you feel better soon.
Well keep us posted just so we know you are alive. I can see a new shoe causing discomfort but not swelling. What happens when you lift your toes? Also is there redness as well as swelling? I would hate to have to go to the ER or doctors today. It has been to busy a day already. If it gets worse just take your MIL with you to the ER. Or wait till hubby comes home. Hope it is nothing.
I myself get hip pain ankle swelling and ocassional calf pain. Luckily my calf pain is usually fleeting. The hip pain and ankle swelling is a more permanant condition. If my calf was actually swollen I would get it checked out.
