We need a new pain med.... | Arthritis Information

Ok... so while I was laying there moaning from pain in my knees and hips. I decided we needed a pain med that was more targeted at our pain.

Here is what I was thinking...

It is attracted to heat. SO where ever you put the heating pad or heated rice pack that is where it goes to fight off the pain.

I know it is not really a good idea, but when you are in pain, like I am... anything sounds good

Sorry the RA is being such a monster.  Icy hot with the heat pack soothes the pain enough to get a little nap in, but knee and hip pain can be so stubborn -- well any joint pain for that matter. I agree we definitely need a new pain med. one that doesn't make you sick and actually stops the pain would be nice, right. not just take the edge off.

Hope you start feeling better soon.  take it easy.

Joonie how many Mgs is your Utram ER?
My prescription for regular Ultram is 50 mgs. take 3 times a day.
So far I say Ultram-Smoltram. Doesn't do jack. Does make me feel a little sick to my stomach even though I eat first.
That's OK because then it keeps me from wanting to snack in between meals.
it is this aweful weather we are dealing with.   i know you are not too far from me and it has just been unbearable.   sorry :-(    i hope you begin to feel better soon.I think your idea is an excellent one.  That's how science often times works, beginning with ideas like yours.  I'm not familiar with the pain meds you guys have listed here, I'm only on Vicodin, but I'll research them.  At this point I just find myself taking a lot of hot baths with Epsom Salt. i love hot baths with epsom salt!   need to get some!Sparky -I prefered hot showers to baths during onset. I would just rotate around in a circle letting the water pound on my sore joints one by one. [QUOTE=wanttobeRAfree]Joonie how many Mgs is your Utram ER? [QUOTE=Shelly63]

Using heat therapy on top of Icy-Hot is not a good idea.  The heat increases your skin's absorption of the methyl salicylate (oil of Wintergreen; the active ingredient in Icy Hot) which can result in acute toxicity.  There have been reports of people dying after applying too much methyl salicylate and/or using heating pads with it.
thank you Jas!!  I've not used any of those products.. but I'm glad you came in and posted the potential issues.Jasmine, thanks for that post!!  I had no idea and when in pain... well you know... anything for relief!   [QUOTE=JasmineRain]

A typical prescription for tramadol is more in the neighborhood of 300-400mg/day (2 tabs, 3 to 4 times/day).

What other medications are you taking?  Some medications can inhibit the breakdown of tramadol into its chief metabolite, which is 200x more effective at relieving pain than the parent compound.  This could render the tramadol ineffective.

Conversely, adding a small amount of benadryl can increase the analgesic effects of tramadol.

As always, don't make any medication adjustments based on my ramblings.

Why do my doctors always give me little baby doses!  He prescribed half of what you are saying.
Sorry you are in such pain but if the current pain med isn't working give a higher dose of Tramadol or Ultracet a try.  If you go online to: www.buycheaptramadolovernight.com they have a whole list of different pain relief meds that you can order.  Just fill out a short form and the doctors will help pick the best one for you.  My mom suffers from chronic pain and it is no fun!  The website uses U.S.  licensed doctors and pharmacies and they even ship it overnight to your door.  Hope this helps and you get some pain relief! It was 100mg of Ultram ER 2xday. One in morning and one in evening. It sucked!

I am back to taking my ultracets. I know they work at least.

But nothing is keeping my right knee from being swelled and feeling like it is broke. Only thing is laying in bed and on my right side and not moving my knee at all.

Thanks for all the kind words and advice. I have done most of it. I even got out of bed and went to the bank, but did not go into wal-mart. My knee was hurting so bad just walking from the car to the bank and back to the car. I could not make it thru wal-mart. My knee just hurt way too much.

But at least I did "exercise" it.
