How to slice potatoes with RA hands | Arthritis Information

I just had a brain storm (now my head hurts;) when I read a post by Joonie about needing cut potatoes and having no one to cut them.  I know there are slicers made for this but not having one, I found an apple corer/slicer in my kitchen drawer (round thing that cuts the apple into wedges and slices out the core).  Just position the potatoe and push down!  It works great on red and small russets!  I did skins and all so its potatoes for supper!!!

Hope this helps someone!  I am always looking for an easier way in the kitchen!

Waddie

oh waddie.. such a great idea!!  I have to say that I avoid potatoes when I have to do slicing... and they come out mushy if I use the food processor!!

Those potato cutters are great...but need a firm hand to push..I bought a potato slicer a few years back , potato goes into a cylindrical shaped container and with the same method as the slicer/corer it has a lid that works by electric with the blades on it..I bought it in a market in london and wasnt sure if it would be any good....its all i use to cut my potatos nowI never peel poatoes..the skin is the most nutrious part....but I don't cook a lot eitherThat sounds like a great idea waddie!

My husband and I have a dispute about peeling potatoes - I use a paring knife and he uses a peeler.  I don't like the peeler, because I am more comfortable with the knife, and I can cut out bad spots easily.  I know the peeler has the end that is desiged for that, but it just doesn't suit me!  I like my knife and the motion of going around and around creating one long peel, instead of basically scraping the skin off with the peeler.  I also can't put the peeler in the dishwasher or it will rust, so I have to hand wash it, LOL! (You can see this has been a big issue)

Hubby says we should should use the peeler, because you lose less of the potato meat that way.  I said, are we THAT hard up?    We usually leave the skins on, (like Buckeye) unless they are green, but still... that is just toooo funny! Can I ask what kind of peeler everyone uses? I will try to find a photo of mine....somewhere!
Also, I discovered a nifty thing that loosens jar lids a few weeks ago, has helped enormously.
My Peeler is called kids n hubby.......Id post a picture but everyone will want one..!!! im left handed too, so i cant peel , cut bread or cheese, if i do they all moan at me for the shape of it..lolPin- you use the same peeler as I do!

You know what I love? My One Touch Can Opener.
Meee tooo SnowOwl, "look Waddie, something shiny"!  Loooove the "Ro-tato" name!  Just the kind of thing my hubby would love to play with!  I am like Pinny, he is, handsdown, the best potatoe peeler/chopper I have plus I think hes kinda cute!  Other that him, I would use my old school peeler and brother is it ever miserable to use!

SnowOwl and Waddie, you guys are too funny -- had me LOL with the "look, something shiny"  comment.  LOL!

But good post.  We could all use suggestions on practical things like peeling potatoes with arthritic hands.

Yep, my hubby is my potatoe cutter. He does an ok job, but at least there is no blood on the potatoes!

He came home from work today and cut up a few more potatoes, without me even asking. So... he loves me! Or he does not want to hear my fuss about his Grandpa eating up all my potatoes LOL!
