"s the Director of Laboratory Services, Mr. Erwin was charged primarily with testing chemotherapy drugs, taking note of the side effects and attempting to mitigate some of those side effects, thus making the drugs more easily useable for cancer patients. He is lauded widely for his contributions to cancer medicine, particularly for the role that he played in the use of the newly developed drug Methotrexate. In working to make modifications to life-saving drugs, Mr. Erwin knew that he was truly making a difference for cancer patients and, in some cases, even facilitating patients' recovery."

He's now retired.  This paragraph is talking about the period in his life/career when he was the lab director - around the time when methotrexate was relatively new.  Methotrexate was discovered in the 40's and was approved for use in cancer chemotherapy in the 50's.

I'm guessing this guy is pretty old?
