how do I get an avatar? | Arthritis Information

Hi... I can't figure out how to do 2 things...

-how do I get the avatar to get under my name? I selected one, then clicked the words "upload avatar", but it didn't work. Please tell me in easy, clear terms.

-how do I send a private message? I wrote a reply to a nice person who wrote to me but when I tried to send it, it disappeared. I can't see a send button like for emailing. I don't what what the heck I'm doing.
