Muscle cramps/Charlie Horse? | Arthritis Information

Share

The last week or so I've been having some problems with some strange stuff. I'm going to have trouble describing it but it's simular to muscle cramps/charlie horses I use to have oftten in my calfs. THe other night I got it in three toes all at the same time and my toes were night stuck in this cramped position. It seemed like it lasted forever but I'm sure it was less than a minute. Last night I got the same sort of thing in my ankle that it was EXTREMELY painful. My ankle was all twisted to the side and stuck in this horrible cramp type thing; again....it felt like forever while it was happening; but I'm sure it was less than a minute and it was gone. It left me pretty sore; but that's all.

It seems like it stems from the joint and then moves outward. Is this ringing a bell with anyone? I'm sitting there screaming in pain and my family is in a panic saying "What's wrong....What's happening....what's wrong?!" And I can't explain it at the time because I'm screaming in pain. THen it's over....and I look and feel like an idiot!

Anyone?

Try eating some bananas--your potassium might be low.  You could also try a supplement.  I was having a similar problem and this has helped me.  Also be sure you are drinking enough water.  Hi Lovie, I'm glad you posted about this because I thought I was the only one who got a charlie-horse type pain in my ankle.  I talked to my RD about it and he suggested all the usual treatments and no matter what I try every so often the ankle pain hits out of nowhere.  Now when it happens I get out of bed, stand on my foot and then take a pain pill and a muscle relaxant, but then that's after the fact.  Maybe try taking a muscle relaxant before bed for awhile and see if it works.  I can go months between spasms and still don't know what causes them.  Take care.  LindyI don't know , but good luck.Lovie, I have had that very thing happen, started in Dec.  Sometimes it is in my toes, once in my ankles, 4-5 times in my left hand (that one was weird, took my hand and pulled all my fingers way to the left!)  I drink pickle juice and that seems to help in about 20 min. or so.  I probably don't need that added salt though!   Pickle juice, which kind and how much and why?  I'll try anything if it's safe.  Lindy join the club.

my toes  tie up in a bow and my ankles seem to touch the floor.

and NOTHING helps.  I eat so many bananas I now hold things with my tail.
Lindy, I don't even remember where I heard that its been so long!  If I remember right, it has to do with the vinegar (high in potassium) in the pickle juice.  It really doesn't matter which kind, though I like the kosher or polish, and as far as amount, I would say between 1/4 and 1/2 cup... 3 or 4 good swallows (not very scientific ).  I will see what I can find out for you. Thanks Waddie.  Probably potassium but you know I think I'll stick with potassium pills.  Half a cup of pickle juice at 3 a.m. isn't a pleasant thought.

Kathy, Drink a mixture of two teaspoons of vinegar and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of warm water. Apple cider vinegar is high in potassium.

I guess this must be where I got the vinegar thing.  Sound like this might be better... no salt!  I don't think my cramps are from exercise induced dehydration (

I found this threat a while back. I liked the bit about tonic water. I hope the link works.

Always drink pickle juice too. Have done it since I was a child. It always makes the Charlie Horse go away.
I've also had the painful toe cramps.  Many times have to get out of bed and walk thru the pain until it goes away.  Sure does hurt.  I think I have also heard of drinking quinine water for cramps. I have never suffered from them myself but my husband is often plagued by them. He gets them all over- his foot, calf, back, sides..... Crap- hit reply too early- by the way- hope they subside soon! Thanks for your replies. I'm at least glad to know You guys experience this too and I'm not soem freak of nature. Not sure I can stomach the pickle juice advise though. lol

JSNM: Your PM box is full. Thanks for your info.
Apple Cider vinegar and honey are antibacterial.

Your body needs potassium, magnesium, and calcium in the correct ratio.  Too much of any one is going to throw cellular communication off.  IE edema, cramping or whatever.  If you're getting enough potassium to form a tail, lol, then it's probably the magnesium thats low.  Up that and the cramping should go away.

I'd have to check but I think the operative ingredient in hummus is magnesium.

According to Dr. Mirkin:

Read it all, but this is the good part LOL:
"Painful muscle cramps at night can also be caused by nerve damage such as that caused by pinching a nerve, muscle damage, a partially-obstructed flow of blood to the legs, or abnormal mineral or hormone levels, so if you have this problem, check with your doctor. If you do not have a serious cause, you can often prevent night cramps by exhausting the stretch reflex before you go to bed by stretching your calf muscles with wall pushups, and applying a heating pad for 10 minutes before you go to sleep. "
Have you had your Vitamin D levels checked recently?  Low Vitamin D can cause muscle cramps, aches and weakness.............. Lovie:  Pick your poison!  Seems it is all over the place!  Lovie:
I too have had cramps in my toes, feet, calves, and hands. It's not fun and it's very painful. I was prescribed muscle relaxers and I try to take them at bedtime. I also try to eat a banana a day. It must be working 'cuz I haven't had them for awhile. I hope it goes away for you. I know how awful it is.
take care
