legs feel like falling asleep | Arthritis Information

The past couple of weeks, my legs have been feeling like they are falling asleep. It starts at my hip and then goes down my leg. It does it mostly when I am laying down or sitting up in the bed with my legs out as straight as they are going to get. It will also do it when I have my leg bent at the knee to alleve some of the pressure and pain off my knees.

This is new to me.

It is weird to me because it does it like a few mins after I have stopped moving and am at rest. It is not like I am sitting in that position for hours or anything like that. It is like within a few mins after I have gotten into position.

This started up about the same time the leg jerking and twitching in my legs came back this time around. I was told all of the jerking and twitching was from fibro.

Joonie,

I am not sure because I am not a doctor. But this sounds like it could be like a pressure palsy, You say you get it when you are sitting and laying in bed. Sounds like there is pressure being put along the long nerve track. I know you have been not well, But try to force yourself to take a walk everyday, start with a ten minute walk, then move up to 15 min. do this until you make a 30 minute walk everyday....by spending a half hour a day doing this it will make the other 24 1/2 hours so much better.

We have to make ourselves ( I am talking to my self also ) move for exercise. That means through pain and fatigue, because the very thing that is keeping us from doing the exercise is what is adding to our fatigue and pain.....

I hope this makes sense. I have always hated the "you got to exercise" talk. I hope you are doing better real soon.

Take Care girl,
Tink
Good advice above but add another... tell your doctor.

I don't know about all of you, but I have a tendency to just chalk up symptoms to what I know I already have, but it could be something new and unrelated.

Leg pain is often a pinched nerve in the lower back. Sometimes stretching can help, sometimes surgery and probably other things to try that are in-between.

thinking of you,

Mine use to do that a lot. From the knee down they would start to fall asleep and in my feet. Sometimes a tingle or pens & needle feelings too. I was sent to a neruologist and that's when he dx'ed the low B12. I take b12 injections for my problem and it helps. If I go a long time without a B12 shot it starts again.

Not saying it's your problem....but it was an easy fix for mine.
Sounds very frustrating.  Could it be hip inflammation pressing on the nerve?  I don't know...just guessing here.

Hope it resolves or your dr. has an idea.
Joonie please tell a doctor- I don't like the sounds of it. Hope it's just a freak thing that goes away! Yeah, it might be from my lower back! I have inflammation on my spine again. So... it is probably pressing on my spinal cord again. The last few days I have not been able to walk around much because my lower back has been spasming again. It is because I cannot stand up straight again. My knees are swelled and it is making my posture lean forward, but not like I am walking around with a chair on my back kinda lean forward. It is more like a zig-zag. It is painful. It is not from stiffness, or lack of movement, it is from the swelling has went to hard swelling and my joints just cannot move right now matter what exercise or stretching I do.

I am glad I am getting my infusion Thursday. My fingers have been soo painful and swelled. It is hard to use them.

I am to be taking B-12 shots too, but my neurologist wants to give it to me himself, but I do not want to bother someone to take me to get a shot every week. When I go back to him, I will ask him if I could give it to myself, and that I will need syringes.

Joonie... I'm so sorry to hear what a hard time you are having.

It did sound like lower back trouble to me. I'm glad you have a dr appt Thurs.

I think you can get a "lesson" in giving yourself injections from your dr's nurse. Part of a nurse's job is patient education and giving injections is part of that. If they let you, listen to the technique, practice on an orange and banana, and you can always ask me, but I'm sure you'll do fine.

If that isn't an option, check into those shuttle bus services for the disabled. You need it and deserve to utilize it... you are who they are for.

I'm new. I don't know if you have family and friends around you for support. I hope so.

Joonie, sorry to hear you are hurting again. It does sound like the inflammation in your spine is pressing on nerves running down your legs. The spasms can be awful. When I get them, I use ice, and heat to "shock" them into calming down. It works for me.

feel better soon!
Thanks everyone!Joonie,
I have been having that type of feeling in my fingers and thumb on my left hand. It feels like pins and needles. I go to dr on the 18th and was gonna bring it up then. I hope it eases up for you. I know how weird it feels.
take care
