Work Saga Pt. 2 | Arthritis Information

Ok everyone. I had my accomodation meeting today. This was just to sit down with HR admin, super and assistant super and work out a rough draft. I gotta say it was a little intimidating just me the lowly peon with all the higher ups.  I think I stated my situation well as I could. I mentioned that there would be days when going out to my schools would be an issue due to my RA. Not being able to ambulate back and forth from office to schools as there is a lot of walking involved. My job as stated by my super in the meeting is 85% (I don't agree and will look up verification to back me up) in the field at my schools testing and that the only way to accommodate me was for me not to come in on those days when I couldn't get out and about.  I did mention I was more than willing to do any desk work in exchange for not going out as I could sit at a desk with little problems. That is was just the walking and getting around so much throughout the day that was difficult at times.
I am believe under ADA I can ask to be placed in another available position that is within my scope of abilities as a reasonable accommodation.  Does anyone know if that is correct? Also once my accommodation is written and signed can changes be made at a later date if needed?
Thanks for listening everyone.

I don't know the answers but I'm wishing you a lot of luck in getting the accommodations you need! I'm so impressed with you... how intimidating... and you did it!

When do you find out if they are willing to allow you to do deskwork on days you cannot tolerate walking?    My career, nursing, is strict; you either do the whole job or you get a different one. I don't have a high enough degree to teach or do public health. I would have to go back to school to learn some kind of desk job like statistical analysis or even medical billing. I've tried and been unable to make it through any course, even if for quilting... I always end up asleep in my car.  I can't type for long. I'm still trying to get disability. It's a long ordeal.

I don't know what to say about ADA.  Maybe if the job is an either do it all or not, they can get around it.

I hope you get your answer soon,
CathyMarie

Hi - Good job on meeting with HR, stating your need for accomodation, etc.    If there is an open position that you are qualified for, that could be considered a reasonable accommodation.   Modifying your current duties could as well.   Link below that outlines it nicely and may give you some ideas on how to approach the next step.

I also hope you get things worked out so you can remain working. I think it would be difficult to navigate but you have taken the first steps, Good for you. I wish you the best of luck.
