Asymmetrical joint pain and flares? | Arthritis Information

I read that RA is usually symmetrical but it NEVER hardly ever seems to be symmetrical on me. I have random joints hurting in different ways all the time.

Anyone else experience asymmentrical joint pain and flares? Could it be anything but RA or is RA pretty much the catch-all for something like this?
Do keep in mind that not everything that hurts is RA.  You can have RA and still have other painful conditions.  I have several parts that never really feel normal - remnants of my wild and reckless misspent youth. mine is not symmetrical just one more odd ball characteristic for my RA.  ha haWelcome Abby...  I just want to second that comment about not everything being RA, even in joints. I have osteoarthritis too in some joints... only one side. I also am recovering from a joint injury. Then there are things like bursitis. Hopefully, your Dr can figure it out.

I forgot to say that my RA is symmetrical, although always worse on the left.
My osteo is the one that is unilateral but it still burns like the devil.

Mine is not symmetrical either. Never has been.

i have figured out that I likely have a gluten intolerance, as when I eat lots of wheat etc, my pain is a LOT worse. If I cut wheat out, I feel great (or better).

Try it - sometimes celiac disease presents with joint pain.

My joint pain is both assymetrical as well as migratory sometimes. Other times not.Always symmetrical for me. Sometimes my left side is a little worse than my right and it is not my dominant side- go figure.Mine is not symmetrical.  Right arm/wrist/hand/jaw are MUCH more involved.  Costo is mostly on the left side.  Foot pain is also worse on the left.Just want to say that my RA has always started on one side, for example the right side would hurt and involves most of the right side, this lasts a few days THEN it starts on the left side...hope that helps you - because of being asymmetrical it took me longer to be diagnosed, but I definitely have RA, hugs You might be Palindromic - check out www.iprs.org - if you are, don't ever mention it here on AI.

what is symmetrical anyway?
I have pain in ALL My joints when I am at my worst...... and some are worse than other...my right knee, ankle, wrist are all much worse than any other joint.... but I use them more often or harder.......  the symmetry is relative.. point being having pain.. albeit not the same level of pain.. but having pain in all joints.
My RA affects both sides of my body, but I may not always flare in the same joint on each side of the body at the same time. My RA symptoms are mostly on my right, and when that subsides it moves to my left for a day or so, then back to the right.  I was wondering the same thing about the diagnosis being correct, but  lucky me.....it is RAsymmetry means that both sides are involved..it does not mean that both sides are involved equally nor that they are active at the same time.  [QUOTE=Pip!]You might be Palindromic - check out www.iprs.org - if you are, don't ever mention it here on AI.

Ditto for me too. Right now i'm flaring in both hands/wrists but the left is definately the one most painful.
Thanks, Buckeye - try www.palindromic.org - see what I get for trying to abbreviate.

In the beginning of Palindromic, it's migratory and only on one side - the doc's will call it bursitis, or tendonitis, or some such nonsense.

When it progresses, and it does, it will usually be more 'fluid' as in - first the shoulder then the knee - and when it switches to 'all the time' it will be the entire body with one or two joints 'going off' while the rest of the body is just in pain.
