So I was browsing through some old back up disks that I have around the house today and found these.  They were taken about 2 days post op of my left total hip replacement.  Just in case anyone was on the fence about having the surgery and wanted to know what to expect.  It looks worse than it felt really.  Actually, I was able to tolerate the pain without even using the narcotic pain killers I was given.

Holy cow.  But made a nice background for that tat to stand out from :(oofa Bob! Bruising on the entire leg!!!! Wow.  You didn't even need painkillers?  Are you Superman?Stupid man was more like it.  I think it's just some macho guy thing.  I took one or two Lorcets but that was it.  I needed muscle relaxers more than a painkiller.  It was stinging pretty bad by this point though.  You know how bad bruises feel right?  That stinging of the skin almost like a sunburn.Youch.  That sounds pretty awful.   How is the new (ish) hip?  Was it worth the surgery?Best thing I ever did.  I think I had the right one done in september of 2005 and the left in january 2006.   All the pain I was in before was gone when I woke up replaced by a new...but temporary pain.  I honestly forget I have them from time to time.  The RA still makes the connective tissue in there inflammed and stiff but it can't damage the joints anymore.I wonder how RA chooses the joint it wishes to destroy????? Rock, paper, scissors?Oops, I just realized that I put the same one up twice.  Darnit, I'll never find them again.  Well you all get the idea though. It does seem strange though doesn't it? Even how it choose random joints from day to day. Gee I think I'll attack the shoulders today.. I think the RA somehow realizes what I need to do in a day, and makes sure to find those joints first.

Thanks ever so.....
I wonder how RA chooses the joint it wishes to destroy?????
EENY MEENY MINNEY MO......Who knows, sounds as good as any other ideas.

It really looks painful.  I didn't have any bruising when I had my knee replaced and I was expecting some.  For surgery I just picked the leg that didn't have any mosquito bites!!!! The left one is next but I'm putting it off with Synvisc injections.

Sounds like you did great post op.  You had youth going for you.  Lindy

I'm glad to hear that Bob.Bob...I'm glad surgery is done. Good luck on your recovery. Don't hold back on pain med before you go to physical therapy... it relaxes you and helps the therapist. I thought I didn't need it and shouldn't drive with it but both Dr and therapist ordered me to take it before. It did help a lot with the passive ROM. Of course PT is only a 3min drive from me.

Bob, did you have an anterior or posterior incision?  Can you tell us a bit about your recovery time, and any physical therapy?Actually it was a lateral incision and is only about 5 inches long.  I had titanium bone implants with ceramic bearing surfaces put in.  Recovery was not bad for the right one.  They come in and roll you out of bed the next day after that it got much easier.  I did three weeks of in home therapy, and then about a month (I went longer than needed)  of pool therapy and strength training.  It worked out really well for me and I'd do it again in a second as long as I was in the shape I was in then.  Now, I don't think I'd do so well with all the problems I'm having.

If anyone has any other questions shoot me a PM or just ask away here, I'm happy to share.

Thanks Bob.  The surgeon I am seeing does an anterior approach and it is said to have a quicker recovery, because fewer muscles are cut than posterior.  That's why I was asking about recovery time.  I believe there's also supposed to be fewer restrictions.  (Did you have a restriction about not moving your leg 90 degrees?  If so, how do you do that - it seems impossible!)  How long was it before you could walk without a walker, and/or cane?  Did you have someone staying at home with you when you came home from the hospital?  I'm just wondering if my husband is going to have to miss work to babysit, LOL!
