I have engaged in not only bargaining but in bartering, although I am in a small town environment.

I especially appreciate the advice re: going armed with the customary and standard Medicare rate of pay.

This is a great article!  In the 80's when we were in the middle of recession, my DH was 'down-sized'.  I negotiated with my sons Ped. to pay cash at a 30percent discounted rate.  Also, his orthodontist offered to finish his treatment for braces for free!  There are great people out there but they can't read your mind so... speak up!
