Pain Meds Questions - How many | Arthritis Information

I was wondering how many different types of pain meds can you take either together or within hours of each other?

I only have Ultracets, but some times even the Ultracets do not help my pains when I am flaring or doing bad.

I usually take 2 Ultracets. I wait to take them until I have more than a couple of joints screaming blood murder and when my other joints are just nagging me. So... I take them and then about an hour or 2 later the joints that were just screaming are now nagging and the nagging joints are quiet, and the quiet joints are now nagging. So... it is a vicious cycle that I have yet to figure out how to make 8 Ultracets help with.

I can take 1 Ultracet every 3 hours, but it does not work as well as the 2 ultracets every 6 hours. I have tried to split a couple of doses to 1 Ultracet, you know to get less hours of pain, but the 1 does not do well.

So... I was thinking I might need something to take when the Ultracets just do not cut it. Hopefully to help me to not think of only way to get rid of the pain is to go to the ER.

I was wondering... are there stronger pain meds that I can take, while the Ultracets are still in me, for when the Ultracets do not work on my pain?

part of the problem Joonie is that you wait too long to take them..you can't wait til the joints are screaming you have to shut them up when they start whispering...talk to your dr about what to take for break through pain...

You definitely need to talk to your doctor about this.  As buckeye said, you shouldn't wait until pain is unbearable before doing something about it.  Kinda like dealing with a fire.  You don't wait until the house is engulfed in flames before you grab the fire extinguisher.  talk to the dr.  I do NOT ever skip my ultram.. whether I hurt or nbot  first thing in the morning I take them and last thing at night. otherwise Id never get ahead of the pain. I also have vicodin.. someplace.. the damn bottle grew legs and disappeared on me.

 I have 2/3 of a bottle and I can't fiiiiinnnd it...  wailing, shuddering sobs... and its too soon to ask for a refill.

 If you are having breakthrough pain then you need breakthrough meds.

An excellent analogy. When it comes to pain early intervention is best, at least from my point of view.

Echoing what has already been said: Joonie, speak with your physician about taking the Ultracet on a schedule and about break through pain control.

Best wishes, Shug

I was doing good about taking the ultracets before the pain got worse. But then my hubby hurt my feeling when he called me a "drug addict". He was joking of course.

I did not mean how many different. I meant like what 2 different pain meds can be took together. I need some kind of idea what goes with Ultracets. I am to be switching to Ultrams. But I have not gotten my RX filled yet. Kinda scared to switch in the middle of all the new pains I am having.

I am not sure but I think Ultrams and ultacets are simalar. One I think maybe does not have tylonol in it? But I am not really sure. Maybe I am thinking of Tramadol.
You should ask your doctor what different pain meds can be taken at the same time.

I have read elsewhere that you have some difficulties with the staff where you routinely get your prescriptions filled, however it has been my experience that the pharmacist and the pharmacy staff are my best allies in this ongoing search for information and knowledge about medications, medication interactions, what to expect, and how and when to take medications.

Bon chance!
Ultracet = 37.5mg tramadol + 325mg acetaminophen (regular-strength tylenol).
Ultram = 50mg tramadol.

Generic ultracet costs about .00 per tablet; generic tramadol is less than 50 cents/tablet.

You can safely take ultram (plain tramadol) with acetaminophen (plain tylenol).  In fact, you might get more relief from it since you'll be getting a bit more tramadol per dose.

Talk it over with the pharmacist when you pick up your script.  He/she is the expert. I do not know much about pain meds. Alls I know is I am probably allergic to codiene, since Lortabs make me paranoid.

I just do not want to go thru the trial & error of finding a break through pain pain med, it is expensive and I do not have much money to throw down the drain.
Yeah, That is what I was planning on doing. I go for my Remicade infusion on the 24th. If I can just last that long. I will ask her for something for breakthru pain. That is why I am asking, I want to be able to make an informed decision and not have to waste money on RXs like I did last time when we were trying to find a pain med for me. That was just depressing LOL!

Right now, all I have been taking is my Ultracets & Robaxin. I do not even have no regular Tylenol. I need to get some more. I am suppose to pre-medicate before my infusion with arthritis tylenol.
You can't take tylenol with ultracet, as ultracet already has tylenol in it.  Wait 6 hours between them. Does your insurance cover tramadol? My co pay last year was four dollars at Walmart. I did not know they were that expencive.No, it was just that you reminded me that I was out of Arthritis Tylenol. I know I am not suppose to take anymore Tylenol with it. I read the side of my bottle.
