Familial associations of RA with AI diseases | Arthritis Information
Hemminki K et al. – Data suggest that that there is an extensive genetic sharing between the familial risks of RA and a large number of autoimmune diseases and related conditions.
Methods
- Study to estimate associations of RA with any of 33 autoimmune diseases and related conditions among parents and offspring, singleton siblings, twins, and spouses
- The Multigeneration Register in Sweden was used as a reliable source of information
- Data on The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was calculated as a measure of the relative risk
Results
- 47,361/447,704 pts, were diagnosed for RA
- The SIRs for RA were 3.02 in offspring of affected parents, 4.64 in siblings, 9.31 in multiplex families, 6.48 in twins, and 1.17 in spouses
- Associations with the familial risk of RA in offspring were observed for ankylosing spondylitis, localized scleroderma, Sjögren's syndrome, SLE, SSc, Hashimoto thyroiditis, pernicious anemia, sarcoidosis, psoriasis, Wegener's granulomatosis, and asthma or polymyalgia rheumatica
I know this isn't the point of your post, but I got all my autoimmune diseases from my dad's Swedish side of the family. My mom probably shouldn't have married my dad, but then where would I be.My mother and dad both had RA -- my mother's three sisters had: JRA, RA and RA & Lupus -- I come by my adult onset Still's disease naturally -- a bad gene pool.
