Converting Disorder - JRA kid | Arthritis Information

After my JRA kid has normal labs, mri and exam....they now say he has Converting Disorder.

This is where you take stress or a stressul event and convert it into real pain. Anyone heard of this? Are they sending us down the wrong path? We are now going to see a psychologist.

Conversion Disorder is a dubious diagnosis. It's rare and extremely difficult to diagnose, it takes years to get to a dx of conversion disorder and multiple doctors are required (rheumy, neurologist, psychiatrist, physiatrist). I'd suggest you get a second opinion - http://www.nlm.nih.gov/MEDLINEPLUS/ency/article/000954.htm

I've had JRA for 39 years, there have been times I've had little obvious inflammation, good blood tests, etc, and still been in pain. Every rheumatologist I've every seen has said this is common in JRA.

I'm glad someone else answered who has some of knowledge of this.  It seems like you could do what they are suggesting - see the psychologist - and also get other opinions at the same time.  Trust your instincts. I am in the same position. I was dx with JRA over 12 years ago and my blood work has been normal for at least the past 8 years. I would def get a second opinion, so many rheumys have told me its in my head....It's weird, my rheumies (in Conn & Florida) all have said blood work doesn't really mean anything - it's only suggestive. My current rheumy has told me flat out you can have normal SED rate, negative RF, etc etc and be flaring at the same time.

He said x-rays are the only proof positives, the problem with them is by the time damage is done on x-ray it's too late to treat.
If your joints are damaged than too much overuse can act it up.  Usually when I was in exacerbation it would be noticed on lab reports.  But, once the damage is there the joint can hurt at any time or all the time.  I say just keep trying different medication. I think I have been on most all the NSAID's out there.  Now I take Mobic.  Nothing helps  all  the soreness except sleep and hot baths though....
