What is nomal? My is 37 and I am in allot of pain. Also I want to ask you the doctor told me that my white blood count is up and that is nomal with RA. Can anybody confirm  that. Never heard of it and I am so sick today. Do you think I have a infection in my body is that why it is up. Thanks to all. JoanJust had mine taken. It was 4. I can never get an explanation why mine is normalnever had an abnormal sed rate...... go figure...... seronegative too.Angel, fluid they took from my knee had a really high white count even though I didn't have an infection.  That played a huge role in  my diagnosis.Mine has been 54, but was 25 last time. I think normal is below 20.  But when my sed was 25, my CRP was 10.8.  I've heard its a better marker. Is that the same as ESR? My last test was 28Yes it is the same as ESR (Erthyrocyte Sedimentation Rate).  According to my lab, the normal reference range is 0-20, but it can vary so it is best to get a copy of your lab results.  My ESR in March was 63, which is typical for me.

Here's some more information about the test: http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/esr/glance.html

Also, my white blood count is usually high, just over normal.

Normal, as has already been said, depends on the laboratory performing the tests. And as InnerGlow indicated, individual norms also vary greatly dependent of gender, age, diagnosis, etc.. ESR tend to increase with age and in usually higher in females.

"Normal" for me is consistently in the low 70's, with spikes to the mid-to-high 90's. However, as my RD repeatedly tells me, ESR without including clinical findings and other lab values in not indicative of disease activity, per se.

WBC is indicative of illness/wellness, but again the complete blood count needs to be considered.

Best wishes for feeling better soonest. Shug
I thought that the white blood count thing might mean infection. I'm seroneagtive too and anytime my seds rate has been high it's been like 25 or so...so really not that high. My doctor just blows it off as active inflammation and we work to reduce it. I've never been told I was high for white blood count; just the seds rate. Don't take my word for that one for sure.

To All, Thanks for replying. I went to the walk in clinic here where i live and the doctor told me that  my white count was much to high even having RA it should always be looked into. She does not know why my doctor yesterday didn't do anything. Well here is the thing I had a bad ear infection and sisus infection that was the problem. She put me on  meds to clear it up and told me to see my doctor if I don't get better. She also said I want you to have another white blood count taken to make sure it is not that high. So there I paid for anthoner office which pi-- me off. I am retired and have very little money so this did get me upset. The doctor said hopfuly within 48 I should start feeling better. So I hope so. JoanThe higher the dose of prednisone the higher my WBC becomes. It's related I believe.

feel better real soon Joan!

I've found since the RA that my sinus infection symptoms aren't as bad as they used to be, so sometimes it's difficult for me to tell if my infection is gone and it is just allergies.  If your WBC is higher than your usual, it should be checked into.[QUOTE=wanttobeRAfree]The higher the dose of prednisone the higher my WBC becomes. THats true and aqlso your blood glucose can elevate
Hi Clufus, my ESR is currently 39, but GP and RD say this is not a true indication, as pred makes it lower than it shows, so they say being 39 is not really 39 but much higher, do you take prednisone?  Regards Janie. For the most part your RD is just going to treat you for RA/Arthritis problems only. Don't count on them being concerned about things like an ear infection or sinus infection. Always seek the advise of a GP for anything not directly related to your joints.
Glad you got some answers and hope you'll soon be feeling better. For me personnally a high white count is usually do to infection. Anything over 20 is considered a high sedrate. Sometimes I have had swelling and felt awful and my sedrate was in normal range. Like right at 20. I was taking prednisone at the time so I wondered if that had an effect on the test. But I have had a 45 on my sedrate and my c reactive protien was 5.7 so the test really vary.
I am glad you got a second opinion on the high white count. Sorry you are flaring and sick at the same time. Feel better soon.
