I've been told that I need to have an MRI of the head to rule out acoustic neuroma because of the difference in hearing between my right and left ears.  This requires the contrast medium gadolinium.  I've heard lots of scary things about this dye and I wondered if anyone here has had an MRI done with it?

From what I can gather, it's very safe for the patient unless they have moderate to severe kidney problems which I do not.   So I should be relatively in the clear for this right?  That is unless I'm allergic to it then that's another ballgame.

thanks

Bob,

My eye doc told me i had to have an mri and mra w/contrast, but then when it came time for mri/mra, tech told me i didn't need contrast.  hmmm,  hope he was right.

anyways, my eye doc said the contrast they were to use was safer.  don't know if it was gadolinium.

have you had lab recently, so you know kidneys and liver are okay?

i mentioned my concerns about contrast to my other docs, and they said to be hydrated before and drink lotsa watah after to flush out contrast stuff.

i had mri of head too.  pretty noisy, tho they gave me ear plugs.  took about 30 minutes.  if you can, don't wear clothes with metal/zippers, if you do, they'll just switch ya to a gown probably.

well good luck, hope all goes smoothly and ya get a good report.  take care.

yep, what Joie said...... IDK if I had that kind of contrast, but I've had brain MRIs and MRIs of just about everything below the brain too..... with and without........

My husband had that same test recently when he had unexpained ringing, pressure and diminished hearing. They didn't warn him about any dangers with the contrast when prescribing the MRI. He did fine and did not have the tumor thankfully. Ended up he had Lyme.

Hope all goes well for you.

I think I'll be ok with this test.  I've read up on gadolinium and it's no more risky than the contrast medium that is used in CT scans and I've had several of those with contrast.   I know I don't have a tumor.  This hearing loss is from years of listening to music way too loud and playing my guitar too loud too with no earplugs.

Lesson for the day kids?  Wear your earplugs when around loud noises...and your mother in law!

I think what I need is just plain old tubes in my ears to drain fluid that builds up from my allergies.   Either way, I go for the MRI on April 18th at 8:30pm.  Yes I said pm  that's just wrong man!

Bob
8:30 p.m.????   Well, don't fall asleep in the MRI machine.  LOL

Good luck.
