I have been on Methotrexate for about 3 years now and have NEVER
experienced the known side effect of mouth sores....until recently.

I take the folic acid like i'm supposed to but lately i've been getting
them...any hints or advice about why or what i can do to STOP THEM.

Now if your talking about sores inside the mouth that hasn't really ever been a huge problem. When I have ever had a problem inside my mouth listerine has clearned that up pretty quickly.

Hope it doesn't last too long. I've had some horrible ones and they are terrible.

Good Luck

Lisa,

Are you talking about inside the mouth or outside the mouth? I'm going to assume inside the mouth.

Assuming your dose of MTX has been unchanged since the mouth ulcers started appearing, you might consider:

  1. Whether you have started taking another medication or mineral or vitamin that might cause MTX to be more toxic.
  2. A common oral infection [tooth infection or yeast.....]
  3. Aggressive tooth cleaning.
  4. Stress
  5. Hormonal changes
  6. Food allergies
  7. Viral infections
  8. Incorrect use of folic acid

Most people I know are prescribed 1MG of folic acid daily. Not the over-the-counter variety, but the prescription.

Lisa,  I just up my folic acid, double, when I get a mouth sore and it goes away.  I hope you are so lucky.  I always get mouth sores with mtx.

I had what they called canker sores and I was told that they were caused by a virus, similar to a cold virus. I was also told that eating too much fruit (acid) could cause them. I sometimes had them in my throat and the doctor would put some kind of purple stuff on them and it did help. I was also told that yogurt would help.
I was a physician's assistant for 15 years and we would go to the nursing homes once a month to see the patients and they had mouth sores a lot and the doctor would prescribe Gly-Oxide which cleared them up almost over night.  As I recall the main ingredient was peroxide.  It is also used on geriatric patients whose mouth hygiene was not what it should be.
I would say that if you did not have these mouth sores before mtx, then the mtx could be the cause.

Mouth sore caused by mxt are painful !!! As I am sure you know.  I haad mouth sores from mtx several years ago.  My Dr. told me to mix liquid bendryl and mylanta equal parts.  Then rinse and swish the mixture in your mouth.  DO NOT SWALLOW !!! Spit in the mixture in sink or somewhere else. You can use this 4 times a day.  It really does help !!UGG, WENT THROUGH THE MOUTH SORES WHEN I WAS ON THE METHOTREXATE.  NOT INSIDE BUT AROUND MOUTH AND ON LIPS AND IT HURT BADLY.  I HAD NEVER HAD A FEVER BLISTER  IN MY LIFE BEFORE AND NEVER KNEW HOW PAINFUL THEY WERE.  I WAS TOLD TO USE ABREVA...CLEARED THEM UP WITHIN A WEEK.  LET YOUR RHEUMY KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING...YOU HAVE HAVE TO LOWER OR STOP THE METHOTREXATE.  GOOD LUCK!
