Oh man- I couldn't sleep so I thought I grabbed a xannax in the dark and swallowed it and it was a MTX which I just took my dose of 8 pills yesterday.

I've tried but I can't vomit it up.

I don't have ipecac. Any suggestions? Should I be worried?!!!!
oh well no one to help me.... I drank a full bottle of water and I think I'll take a folic acid to negate the MTX....
Now I'll never sleep and I'm afraid to take a xannax on top of everything else.
Hi WTBF, if you haven't already, phone the poisons info line and see what they suggest?  Best of luck, I really hope its not serious, how much did you take on top of usual dose?  JAnie.  Sorry that no one could help, how much did you take.. Seek urgent advice.

sorry no one was available when you had your emergency.  I hope you are o.k. now???

How many m'grams in each pill?  Ours in Oz are 2.5, 5 or 10 - I have 10mg ones and take 2 per week = 20mg - hve been as high as 27mg some years ago.   If pills are only 2.5 mg I think u should be ok, but panic has prob. raised blood pressure readings  :o !  The real worry wd be if you thought u had forgotten to take the 8, and then took another eight the next day.  I hope u eventually went to sleep and hve woken up feeling no worse than one usually feels after an mtx dose.

I do not think that one 2.5 mg tab would be considered an overdose per se; four or more tabs might be considered an overdose and require intervention if taken in addition to eight the day before.

The first week my dose was reduced from 22 to 17 mg I was on 'auto-pilot', drew up and injected the 22. The next week I was much more careful to be fully aware of what I was doing.

Call your physician in the AM to let him know what took place. The most important thing is to be as calm as you can be and keep yourself hydrated.

Please let us know what your doctor says and how you are. Best wishes, Shug
If it was a 2.5mg tablet then you are ok, instead of 20mg you took 22.5mg and I know of people who have taken 25mg per week.  I hope you are ok.wanttobeRAfree, okay first stay calm...panicking will only make your thinking abilities worse. Deep breathes...

Call a Poison Info Line or your pharmacy or your doctor or hospital.

I seriously doubt it will do you any real harm. If it had been narcotics, barbiturates or sleeping pills that may have been different. I doubt MTX is going to do anything too terrible maybe make you a tad nauseous or tired because you have taken so much.

Do call someone who can tell you, as I and others have mentioned.

Let us know how you go.

Take care.
If it's 2.5, and you only take 8 pills you should be fine.  I take 10 2.5 pills a week (25 mg)

Warning....don't take pills in the dark.  Been there, done that.  Had a headache about an hour before time to get out of bed.  I swallowed 2 tylenol PM's, lol..........funny, but not.
Could have been dangerous.
You're fine. No need to call poison control. Hey WTB,

Are you ok?

Wantto!

Please be careful of that stuff!  I doubt that one little MTX will harm since there are those who take more on a regulated dose than you and are fine.....

I hope you check in here and let us (me!) know you are okay!!!!

Hugs.....
WTB~  I'm sure you have this resolved by now, but just so you know......my RD told me that the reason you switch from oral to injectable at 20mg is because your body won't absorb more than that in pill form.  Sorry no one was around last night for ya.Hi Everyone-

All is well.  I will certainly never do something as stupid as take a pill in the dark again. I do use a pill organizer and the only thing I thought was in my purse was pain meds and xannax (for just in case emergencies). Well I must have needed a refill of MTX at one time so it was in there as well so I could call it in at work.
It was one of those situations where you know something is not right but you don't follow your gut and then when you check out what you did- you were wrong.
They are the same shape and size as my xannax but it was odd that there were only a few in the bottle. After I swallowed it I held the bottle up to the full moonlight and YIKES! MTX!!!!!

Well I know I can never be bullimic because I can't bring up my guts...

Anyway My doctor was closed as he is every Friday but I called my pharmacy. He said just watch out for GI bleeding or brusing but I should be fine. FSIL who is graduating with his pharm doctorate this year said I'll be fine....

I was especially mad at myself because I was letting something get to me which was why I couldn't sleep and needed the xannax and then I complicated my life even more....

Thanks for all the concern!

Hi Snow......well it just goes to show ya, their isn't a whole lot that's uniform about this disease. And if 25mg works better for you than 20mg, then I guess your RD is on to something.  :)

I took 25mg in oral form for years and that that 5 extra mgs was helpful.

Your doctor saying that she reserves the injectable MTX for only those that can't tollerate the pills is sort of weird for her to say in my opinion. Is there some sort of shortage on the liquid MTX that I haven't heard about? It's not like it's a different medication it's just administered a different way. It's the same thing and it's just as easily assessable. It's a perfectly safe methode of administering it so I don't quite see your doctors problem with prescribing it if you would like to give it a try; but I don't know why you'd want to fool with the shots if you don't have to. I take Humira & B12 by shot and would much prefer a pill if I could get it that way and I tollerated it well.

After you've been on MTX a while you get use to taking all the pills at once. When I was first dx'ed with RA I couldn't even swallow a pill. Before I stopped taking MTX I would take all 10 pills at once time. Their easy to swallow because their so small. I was surprised the first time I took them all at once how easy they were to swallow like that.
I'm glad all's well wtb. Its funny, because I also keep my vicodin in my purse..for emergencies. Its kind of like a security blanket in pill form. I feel better just having it with me. I'm glad I'm not the only one ( 'cause that would confirm my suspicion that I've lost my marbles). This 'quirk' is not without peril, however. I was driving on a field trip recently and spilled my purse in my van. One of the students retrieved the vicodin bottle that was rolling away from me, but not before inspecting the label.   I could just picture her asking her mom "What is hydrocodone? Ms Leila keeps it in her purse."

Lovie, I realize that this probably isn't a contest but I have to get my self esteem where I can find it...
I can swallow ALL 10 mtx, 1 naproxen, 1 plaquenil, 5 nortryptiline, and 2 sertriline, in 2 swallows!
Yes...I know...I'm amazing!Leila.~just think.........you woild have never known about your amazing pill swallowing ability were it not for RA.  See, their really is a bright to everything leila, I  was thinking that if there were some way you could take this talent on the road~ who knows how far you'd go?  You need to get yourself an agent.Maybe if you added a 6 ft python and a tutu?Snow, you're no slouch yourself when it comes to pill swallowing.  Maybe you could be Leila's opener?
Maybe if you added a 6 ft python and a tutu?
Now wait just one minute! I draw the line at swallowing a tutu! Too scratchy!
And as far as the python...well I'm not even going to touch that one... (but let's just say that skill has been on my husband's Christmas list for years..
