"Low Vit D Looms as Health Hazard" | Arthritis Information
From The People's Pharmacy, mentions link to statins I haven't seen before:

From the article:
"There may be another reason why many people should be getting more
vitamin D. Millions of Americans take statin-type cholesterol-lowering
medications like Crestor, Lipitor or Zocor. These drugs can cause
muscle pain and weakness. Preliminary studies suggest that people who
have inadequate vitamin D levels may be more susceptible to such muscle
problems (Translational Research, Jan. 2009).
One woman
suffered severe muscle pain while on a statin until she was diagnosed
with insufficient vitamin D. Once her vitamin D level was normalized,
her muscle pain disappeared."
My FIL had muscle pain on a statin, but they stopped/switched it and the muscle pain went away. It was considered a side effect.
no surprise there.
Thanks for this.. along w/ all the other VitD articles posted by others, mostly Lynn. I have a friend who has Lupus... upon returning from two weeks in Florida .... she is feeling tremendous!! Gotta be that D!! same as with me!!
Still hear negatives about Vitamin D.
Still hear negatives about Vitamin D.
if so, Jan, please share.
Why would their all of the sudden be such a deficiency in vitamin d? I wonder if it's just the new ailment of the month.

I've wondered that, but I do know some sunscreen-obsessed moms, so I can see how that could make a difference these days.
I remember our old neighbors coming back from the beach and I told their 4 yr. old son I liked his tan. His mom looked stricken! Like I said something horrible! She started stammering, "But I put sunscreen on him everyday! Everywhere! And he wore a hat!"

IDK if it is ailment of the month or new awareness... good question. I do see how sunexposure/sunscreen has effected d uptake. I never used sun screen as a kid! Heck, we use to slather on baby oil to roast ourselves to a nice, golden brown! Did they even have sun screen back then? (The dark age)
The recommended daily amount is the minimum, no? I think it is just enough to keep us from getting rickets!
If there are deficiencies, I believe it is because we (especially children) do not spend the amount of time outside as when we were kids. Television, video games, computers, increased homework requirements so the kids can 'pass the tests' - all this contributes to not only not as much sunshine, but increased weight as well. We are a society of 'couch potatoes' when compared to previous generations... Add that to the scare tactics of '30 SPF (under your long sleeves and hat) or you're gonna' get cancer' cries and it wouldn't surprise me a bit that we're deficient.
Very interesting.
I posted a very good video presentation from an emminent researcher a few weeks ago and Im sure he was one that mentioned suncreams prevent VitD absorbtion. Makes sense!
Also, I dont believe checking VitD has ever been as routine as checking VitB's, Iron etc.,
I actually asked my Rheumy to check my VitD and he said 'Oh yes, I need to do that'. Hmmmm, so at least my reminding him made me aware he considers it important. I know some docs scoff at the idea!
BTW, my VitD level was down to 12!
you're right to some extent SunnyD! that plus many schools stopping recess and gym!!
but 30 minutes of midday sun isn't going to give most people cancer..
30 MINUTES IN FULL midday SUN in the summer months
is all we need to absorb up to 10,000 IU
read this -- an excellent article - though it's long!! :
page 9 states that Vit D produces antibiotic peptides (natural antibiotics) that can quell any infection.......
wow.
