Probiotics: Refrigerated v. unrefrigerated | Arthritis Information

I am aware that there are both refrigerated and unrefrigerated probiotics.  I have read and assume the refrigerated are better but wonder about other opinions.Even when I bought unrefrigerated at the drug store, it said to refrigerate after opening. I have seen some that say refrigeration is NOT necessary.  They are sold that way on Home Shopping Network and by Phillips.

Mine aren't refrigerated when I buy them, but I do refrigerate after I open them.  I've also purchased some from the refrigerated section of the store before.  Honestly, I think the ones I buy and have shipped to me are better.  It probably has more to do with the strains included, and maybe the number of strains in the "mail order" product.

KweenB - which brand do you use, please?

The one I used to get a GNC was to be refrigerated after opening but didn't need to be before.  Then I discovered Florastor which has been much more beneficial for me than the one I mentioned above.  I can't remember how many different strains of active cultures were in the old one though.  It wasn't bad...the Florastor was recommended by my gastroenterologist so I gave it a try.  It's not cheap..but worth it.

I think the refrigerated ones are better based on the fact some strains are found in yogurt , but the unrefrigerated ones say they are more practical for travel, etc. which they are.I just got some that are not refrigerated but will refrigerate after opening. PATHETIC
