From the article:
"Abbott Laboratories may have increased first-quarter profits by more than 50 percent, but those numbers came with two caveats: One, about half of the the profits leap is due to a one-time, 7 million gain on the wrap-up of a partnership with Takeda Pharmaceutical (plus other items). Two, Abbott's top-selling Humira is facing a decline in demand as newly cost-conscious patients back away from the pricey anti-inflammatory. And that doesn't bode well for the rest of 2009."

Depressing that people have to make that choice.  Also depressing they called it a "pricey anti-inflammatory"!!!!!!  That's not really accurate, is it?  Pricey, yes.

The battle against "ignorance" is not just annoying anymore. If people think that Humira is just a "pricey anti-inflammatory," no wonder they think it's ok to forego their injections and just substitute a different (cheaper) anti-inflammatory.

In that case, the ignorance could be quite costly. Obviously, anti-inflammatories will only help with symptoms and not at all with disease progression. I'll bet patients who choose to discontinue their Humira don't all know what the consequences might be.

As uncomfortable as it can be, we must all educate constantly. ~Kelly Young difficulties with my ISP today and cannot get the link to open. I wonder if the author of the article thinks RA is just a few aches and pains?! It seems to be an article targeted to business/investor types - as is typical, they have to dumb down the science until it makes almost no sense in order to compensate for the rampant scientific illiteracy that is so rampant in our culture. Hi Suzanne, I am having some (cough, cough) difficulties with my ISP today and cannot get the link to open. I wonder if the author of the article thinks RA is just a few aches and pains?! [/QUOTE]

Here is a link to Bloomberg from the original article, looks like she was just saying what they said?:

There was also a link to WSJ, but you only get a preview unless you subscribe (they also call it an anti-inflamm.). You can see the comments, though - one mom whose daughter uses Humira made a comment:

Thanks JamineRain, I was able to access the link(s) this mid-morning and I concur with you assessment. Investors are, at least in my experience, much more interested in the bottom line than is medical results-science be damned.

I would think Abbott would want to set the record straight, regardless.  I checked both the Bloomberg and WSJ links, and didn't see any corrections or comments with a clarification yet.  Maybe after the weekend.  They should protect their brand, I think, no matter who the audience is.
