Yet ANOTHER ER trip | Arthritis Information

Yet another ER trip..

We had just fallen asleep when Jakie came into our room crying hysterically, coughing like crazy and real obviously NOT breathing well at all.

I jumped into my clothes got him into his coat and had him at the ER in about 5 minutes total.

When we got there we never even made it to the check in area.. They heard his breathing and the triage nurse said.."Bed 3, get him on Oxygen and get a breathing treatmeent ready"

He was still crying a lot at first but when they gave him the Oxygen he just grabbed it and sucked it in. When they gave him the breathing treatment with the nebulizer, he never once moved it from his mouth.

They got him on a heart monitor too.. (he still has the sticky patches on.)

Then they showed up with the consent to treat, and had all the information already since he's in their computer. I LOVE living in a rural town with a really good hospital.

Anyways he had croup, with complications, probably asthma.

I spent most of the time rocking him, and telling him variations on traditional bedtime
stories. "GoldieGalimimus and the 3  Pachycephalosaurs,"
"The 3 Little Anklysaurs and the Big Bad T-Rex," and my personal favorite, "Cinderceratops."

We were home a little after 1 am. they gave him steroids and a prescription for a week's worth of steroids where the dose is reduced every other day.

He had another bedtime snack and more stories, and was asleep really fast.

He's been fine all day, a little croupy sounding, but ok.

I've had TONS of experience with croup, going back 31 years with my own kids and about 50 years with siblings and neices and nephews.
I have NEVER seen a case this bad. Scared me sh*tless. It sounds scary!  I'm so glad everything is okay, and I think it is good you had some experience, it probably helped you stay a little calmer.

Do you have to get the asthma checked, or do they think it will go away?
I am taking him to our dr next week for a check on the asthma..  We have a strong history of it in the family.. but we don't smoke or have carpeting both of which can be hge triggers.I hope it was only temporary!

Scary experience to go through - for both you and Jackie.   Hope it was a one-time thing. Kathy, what an experience that nobody wanted.  I hope your little guy is better today.  I, too, loved living in rural areas where the doctors and hospitals know how to treat.  Big huggles ~~ CathyKathy, I hope both you and Jakie are doing better today. What a frightening episode all around.

Best wishes, Shug
