I having problem with turning my neck side to side.  I am taking two nprolean a day(1000 mg).  A muscle relaxer at night.  I am Ok in the day time but night time I can not sleep. Can't move head at all.  Head feels very big.  My pain is right behind the ear.  It feel as if it is locking there.  anybody has these symptoms?? Dr. (rheumy) is saying it is neck strain.  But I have it for 3 weeks now.  Cold makes it worse. It becomes stifff.  Daytime apart from restriction in movements and heavy head, I donot have any other pain other than

blasted foot on which I am hobbling because of achilles tendonitis and plantar fascitis.

I suspect these problems are due to RA.
What should I ask my rheumy to give me in medicine form which will help.

Any thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated.

i have neck pain but think it is more OA.  same side right side. i was told many years ago to have fusion which i declined.  you need to have dr run MRI to see exactly whats going on with neck. as far as medicine i just use otc stuff but i must say it hurts when it seems to lock.  good luck.I had an unbelieveable ache in my neck.. felt like I didn't have the strength to hold my head up!!  this was in flare.
I would have to wear a neck support to take a ride in the car that lasted more than 15 minutes.. unless i was driving.. IF I was driving I moved more w/ the vehicle and wasn't jerked around plus had stabilization on the steering wheel w/ my hands.
I also could not sleep at night... I had to support my head/neck region in a certain way to be able to sleep.. and then if I moved I was awakened.

I solved at least most of my nighttime neck pain by using a pillow recommended by the PT that I was seeing. It was initially rather pricey but as soon as it shows the least bit of wear I will replace it.

We must all remember that we can have other things go wrong besides lousy RA.

For a solid year, I had a horrible painful stiff neck with poor ROM yet xrays were neg. My shoulder was also severely painful and restricted. That MRI showed 2 rotator cuff tears so I had to have surgery. I woke up from anesthesia completely cured of my neck pain.... it was all due to my shoulder injury!

Good advice, Shug and Cathy!  Veenu, instead of meds, maybe more investigation into the cause of the pain?  At this point in my RA, I try and opt for less as often as I am able and find, sometimes, a simpler fix.  Oh, and I have that achilles tendonitis thing too, big knots there!
Shug, what kind of pillow do you have?
Kanal Orthopedic Neck Pillow Memory Foam Support. One of the features I like is how truly adjustable this pillow is. Thanks, Shug!  And really cool website! I have neck pain. I am taking Flexeril at bed time. Not much help. Well it helps alot just not enough I guess. I am getting a shot in my shoulder Monday from the RD. Crazy as it sounds it will probably make my neck feel better also. My muscles are swollen at the base of my neck. I look like I have been lifting wieghts. Well I hope it helps, it did last time.
Thanks, Shug!
You are welcome! Like you I attempt to look for solutions to niggling problems that are not dependent upon medications and this was one of my more successful endeavours.

As CathyMarie says it becomes nearly second nature to blame every ache, pain, and discomfot on RA when the solution often has a solution that demonstrates not everything we experience is RA related.

Cheers, Shug
I have neck pain from time to time.  I've found IcyHot or similar topical creams with methyl salicylate to be quite helpful in relaxing the muscles causing the pain.  It tends to be worse during periods of high stress, because I tend to "tense up" all over.  In addition, I sleep all curled up in a ball.  No matter how I lay when I go to sleep, I end up all twisted up, with my neck, legs and arms all bent up.  Occasionally when the pain is really bad I take a Lunesta before bed which helps me sleep like a rock - only then do I wake up in pretty much the same position as when I went to sleep.
