Allergy season - yay (NOT!) | Arthritis Information

Another spring, another allergy season.  Thank God for cetirizine, pseudoephedrine and my neti pot! Oh - and check www.pollen.com to see pollen counts in your area. AAAAACHOOOOOOOOO!  We are just finishing up oak pollen here, UGH!  This always gets me!  Yea neti pot!  We've got lots of tree pollens in Chicagoland right now.  Achooo is right!  Luckily after a couple days of cetirizine I think I'm under control now.  Our oldest son is also bothered by springtime allergies, but luckily our younger one isn't.  I'm also allergic to cats - or at least I was when I was younger.  We have two of the furry beasts in our house, but since I don't have allergy problems in the winter time (when I'm cooped up with cats all day and night) I don't think it's really a problem any more. glad you're not allergic to cats!!

we have cedar and another tree allergy here now.... and I feel it... itchy eyes...(itchier than normal!) and sneezing... stuffy noses..
I was all messed up w allergies and then went to Miami for a week... miraculously.. it was gone.. so what i was fighting in the beginning of April wasn't in Miami!! [QUOTE=babs10]glad you're not allergic to cats!!  My allergies are much better in Florida than they where in Chicago. Logically it makes no sence to me but it is true. Claritin (loratadine) works well, as does Zyrtec (cetirizine).  Both are available generically.  Claritin will set you back about 12 cents/day; Zyrtec around 50 cents/day.  Some say Zyrtec starts working quicker, but that's only an issue for the first pill (assuming daily dosage).  Zyrtec can also be a bit sedating, though nowhere near as much as Benadryl (diphenhydramine).  Benadryl is still the gold standard of antihistamines, but it knocks most folks out and is probably not the best choice when coordination and coherence are needed.  When things get really bad, I'll take Zyrtec in the morning, and Benadryl before bed - both to knock me out and also so I can have the windows open and not spend all night sneezing. Thanks! I appreciate the heads-up and have ordered replacements for some very old neti pots.
