Capital Letters Equals Shouting in Internet Etiquette

by Ricky Delgado 2. February 2009 12:05

In case you didn't know, the internet has its own "etiquette". Yes, I know as you probably do, too, that there are people who have hoped the internet would've become a "lawless land" (as in the wild west or something of the sort) and who have appreciated the "invisibility" of many of their comments and statements and who hope, still, that they can run around and insult others endlessly on forums, groups and other places.

Well, for those who do not believe this should occur, perhaps you should learn a little bit about "Internet Etiquette" (yes, it exists!).

Capital Letters = Shouting

Capital letters are equivalent to shouting on the internet (and in emails) so, try and avoid using them.

I know sometimes you want to "shout" at people, companies, groups, forums and others. But, as in life, shouting is quite rude and, again, as in life, you probably will become very unpopular, ignored and simply left alone in that particular group because you have "forgotten your manners".

Yes, behind the keyboards, screens, colours and computers are real people - don't forget that and try and treat them as such.

Yes, the internet, too, has an "etiquette". Let's do our best to follow it, ok?

The Core Rules of Netiquette

Rule 7: Help keep flame wars under control

"Flaming" is what people do when they express a strongly held opinion without holding back any emotion. It's the kind of message that makes people respond, "Oh come on, tell us how you really feel." Tact is not its objective.

Does Netiquette forbid flaming? Not at all. Flaming is a long-standing network tradition (and Netiquette never messes with tradition). Flames can be lots of fun, both to write and to read. And the recipients of flames sometimes deserve the heat.

But Netiquette does forbid the perpetuation of flame wars -- series of angry letters, most of them from two or three people directed toward each other, that can dominate the tone and destroy the camaraderie of a discussion group. It's unfair to the other members of the group. And while flame wars can initially be amusing, they get boring very quickly to people who aren't involved in them. They're an unfair monopolization of bandwidth.

Babs-

You have used capital letters in posts, p. 6.  You do it yourself.
here's the difference, Jan Lucinda..
I never said I didn't yell........

someone on here did...

was showing her what constitutes yelling on the net.......

you're quite good at pointing fingers
I would assume, if you are saying it is not good, you would not do it yourself.  Seems inconsistent.  Merely pointing that out.I "own" my words.. and I "own" using caps to yell.    when I did it.. I intended to raise my voice in type.
I didn't say it's not good.. the author did.

off to enjoy the day................................

have a great day all
I'm having a great.  GREAT DAY.
I'm having a great.  GREAT DAY.
I might ask you the exact same question.

THIS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING!

This is considered bring more attention to a word.
Here is a link to netlingo. It explains all the lingo on the internet. The link below is for what constitutes as SHOUTING!

http://www.netlingo.com/word/shouting.php
I was on a board years ago and had let myself be sucked into some controversy and a woman answered me in all caps. I asked her why she was shouting and she said she had trouble seeing what she wrote, which of course I read as shouting again. Then the other posters slammed me for being insensitive to someone who couldn't see, but how do you know what people are really saying anyway. I'd invite you all to my living room, I'm better face to face. I thought the same thing when TeedOff started writing in Caps. But writing in all-caps doesn't enhance readability. Both the browsers I use have a text increase feature. I use them regularly. It sometimes takes a bit of fine tuning to get the text just right, but readability is then at my fingertips. I probably should have said that too. I read Teed's post as shouting because she all capped just certain words in her answers, which meant to emphasize or shout those words, I think somewhere she denied shouting at Babs, and I was thinking 'yeah, right'. I think and thought at the other board, well if you can read my answers to your posts (in a normal font) and you're just cap locking your answer (in a normal font) then you can't really say you have trouble seeing the posts. I imagined this really crabby woman with her face pushed up against the screen trying to read what I had posted.

TeedOff-

You are great!!!!

Ninichicken....are you insinuating that I am a crabby old woman with her face pushed up against the screen.  I am and I do. ( kiiiiddddiiinnnggg.)

I much prefer to read something in the larger print as there are times that I am unable to see the print (like now).  Beside the computer I keep a magnifying glass for the real hard times.  I am not now and never have been educated in netiquette and find it most frustrating when someone gets mad at what I say when it is not meant to be critical or mean or sarcastic but is in turn answered with personal comments that are very mean and sarcastic.   How do you know the difference?  Like I always say, I have never heard a written word scream but maybe it can.  When I capitalize a word it is for emphasis, a whole sentence I mean it to get that persons attention and with some it is meant that I am angry or getting angry but you can aways tell by what I say if I am mad or not.  Do you think that Lynn49 is yelling all the time as she does her large print in red?  I don't know....I give up.

I am with you in that it is much, much easier to talk to someone face to face.

TeedOff2009-04-26 21:44:50I have never believed in "shouting" meaning capital letters.  Some people find it easier to read and they use caps because of this.  I find it more difficult to read, so I don't prefer it.  I do think people spend way too much time trying to decipher a hidden meaning in what is written sometimes.  For those people, I say....go outside and get some fresh air.

I probably should have said that too. Just to set the record straight...I enlarge my posts because several people both here and on the AF board have told me they have difficulty reading the smaller print.  And, I use red because....Well I like the color red, sometimes I use blue and orange and pink, etc..   This is a good post.

Especially the part about all caps.

I will bump this again for Loki or whoever it is. Yeah JAM, I'll bump my NUTS on it!  THXS!

Babs-
