I have read that the stores are out of masks. I have not tryed yet to aquire one. Everyone I see is buisness as usual.

I saw a prediction that said two studies predict !,700 cases in the US in a four week time period.
I thought that Mexico  had 2,500 in about a four week time period. So I guess they think it will slow down in progression. Maybe the fact that they will close schools if a suspected case arises. Other wise I do not see how they get there numbers.
I've heard on the news that the masks don't work against this strain, it can get through the mask. Better to wash your hands, stay away from anyone who's coughing, don't touch your face. All the things I do whenever someone comes home sick anyway.I'm coughing... and everyone turns and looks at you when you begin a coughing fit into a tissue on the elevator!
Ido not have the swine flu......  but you feel like a leper when you have physical symptoms as they see ..
I am using my antibacteria gel in addition to hand washing..... when I leave the bathroom after washing hands I use a clean paper towel to open the doors to the main offices....
this is the same thing I do during the winter when everyone is closed in and feel like a germaphobe!!
I just saw an article in aol news that said that "they" are now thinking that this flu won't be as strong as they originally were saying.  It'll be just like any other flu that comes around. We heard the same thing that the masks wont keep the swine flu from attacking, the particles are so tiny that they get through the mask. Our govenment has had leaflet sent out to all homes in the UK advising on the best course of action to take. From the scene of the flu, so to speak, masks are being issued, but more as a containment item than anything else. At least some of the detritus of a sneeze or a cough is contained within the mask. However, as has been pointed out time after time, hand washing is the primary tool of prevention.

In the past couple of days we have seen about 500 people in this small rural clinic. Two have been suspected of being "flu-like" and treated with anti-viral medication. Most, after walking for two or three days to arrive here are dehydrated, malnourished, and exhausted.

Most of our time has been spent in boiling up gallons and gallons of oral hydration fluid and dispensing it in pint-measuring cups, collecting those cups, sterilizing them, and passing out more oral hydration fluid.

In the dispensary there are a half-dozen folks receiving IV rehydration, with four of those on IV antibiotics for a variety of ailments: there are also seven infants being monitored, but none suspected of having swine flu.

So far, the swine flu has been highly hyped in this area, which is so far removed from Mexico City as not not even be a rumour.

Poverty is the illness that infects, affects, and effects these people.
Shug, your update is not only fascinating but also reassuring.  Small wonder the flu has taken so many lives in Mexico.  It is hard to imagine feeling ill, being malnourished and walking 2 or 3 days for aid.

Thank-you so much for your update.  May I suggest a thread of your observations?

Stay healthy, friend!
Here in Croatia the government doesnt seem to be too alarmed although one of our daily papers is giving away free masks on Monday.  This will certainly up their circulation numbers, this is typical for Croatia.

I am a little worried as I work as a teacher and cannot wear a mask in the classroom as my students would not understand me.  I am a germ magnet and hope that people who are sick will not come to class.  One of my students who I last had class with Monday the 27th is home with the flu....I am definately worried about that and am watching for symptoms.
Spelunker  hi can you post, put in your profile, what state you're in?
That always help
s me. I like knowing where people are from,  tells me a bit more about that person, their region, etc.
If in the states, i'm guessing the south, Ky, WV, or miss...??
 ..
That makes me sad, to hear that, esp if its in the states, that people have to walk that far..  We have got to find a better way, to take care of our poor!!
I still have faith in Obama :star:
If you are questioning, Spelunker, Whispered... she has traveled to Mexico to help. [QUOTE=Whispered]Spelunker  hi can you post, put in your profile, what state you're in? That always help As someone else has mentioned, your best course of protection is to keep hands washed and if you cant get to water, keep a small pump of hand sanitiser in your car or purse. I do for use after pushing supermarket trollies, opening doors etc in high use places like a Mall. Dont touch your nose or mouth with unwashed hands, have a hankerchief or tissues that you can quickly place over your nose and mouth if someone sneezes near you, and try to keep away from large crowds of people indoors.

I was shocked to read that 35,000 Americans die each year from complications from the 'flu.
It puts it all into perspective really.

Lyn   Thanks Jas, me too.  It's a school of 6000 students (with a high "springbreak in Cancun" population) so it could get passed around pretty good.  I have not yet heard who or how bad it is yet.  Hopefully the closing is just a precaution.
