Recommendation of a prescription gel | Arthritis Information

I saw the pain management doctor today, who gave me a sample of Voltaren Gel.  Oh my.  I highly recommend it.  She said its not systemic, so it only works on where its applied and doesn't travel around through the body.  I love it. I just got the sample too. Its an NSAID so it has been reducing the swelling on my ankles besides reducing the pain.   Doesn't smell either.Bird - its been several hours, and this terrible sciatic pain in the back of my left thigh is gone.  For now.  The insert says it can give you the same side effects of NSAIDS like stomach issues and a few other warnings, but what a great product.  I wonder how long its been out.  Glad it is working for you.  Finally, something.  Take care ~~ Cathy
Bird - its been several hours, and this terrible sciatic pain in the back of my left thigh is gone.  For now.  The insert says it can give you the same side effects of NSAIDS like stomach issues and a few other warnings, but what a great product.  I wonder how long its been out.  Glad it is working for you.  Finally, something.  Take care ~~ Cathy
My Dr. prescribed Diclofenac and I find it is not even touching the pain now.  Maybe I will ask her about Voltaren.

Thanks guys.

TeedOff2009-05-07 19:13:16It says it hasn't been tested on the spine yet, I wonder what that means? My foot doctor gave it to me for my ankles, but I have started using it for knees and shoulders. Did your pain doctor discuss it with you? Wonder if I can get another sample or get a script?

Did I mention no smell?Teed - you might want to research it first, I think it is diclofenac.  She also gave me a Flector pain patch sample too, and I researched it and maybe that one is diclofenac.  But look it up first.

Bird - she gave me the script too, said to try it, then fill the script if I wanted to as she said the Voltrafen is PRICEY.  I am lucky, I have a .00 cap on my scripts as my Evista is 00 per month :(

This was for the sciatic pain down the back of my left thigh.  Then she said I could use it anywhere my RA pain is, like hands, joints, etc.  It was an open ticket for use.  Well, I wouldn't stick it in my eye of course LOL  Isn't this so KEWL.  Finally!!!!  It wore off overnight and I am right back to the pain this am, but I am trying the patch as it works for 12 hours and she said it was for daytime and wearing under clothes as I wouldn't want to hassle with the gel during the work day.

I really like this doctor - she is so YOUNG !!!!  LOL
what does young have to do w/ anything?Hi JSNM, yes the Voltarens generic name is diclofenac, I have tried mostly all of them as I used to work in a pharmacy and the chemists own antiinflammatory gel was as good as any and about half the price! Hope it keeps working for you. Regards Janie. I have been using it sparingly on Liam, he says it helps a little but I think he likes the Mummy rubbing it all better sensation more! This sounds great.  I will have to see if my rd or gp will prescribe it.  My other favorite are those bandages that heat up when applied.  I cannot remember the name.  Too bad they are OTC as they are pricey but wonderful.
Teed - you might want to research it first, I think it is diclofenac.  She also gave me a Flector pain patch sample too, and I researched it and maybe that one is diclofenac.  But look it up first.

I think you are right Cathy...I should have remembered that.  I find that some of dh's flexall helps for the elbows but still use the diclofenac for the hips.
Glad you like your new Dr. and young is good.
I use it on my spine -- it's been available in Europe for years and is "over-the-counter" -- and it's also available in Australia OTC. It has been a blessing to me. Other rub-ons haven't touched the pain, but this dulls it sufficiently to operate.

There is a coupon available for off co-pay at www.goaheadrubitin.com -- that up to off is good for up to 6 months.

It has been tested on hands and the knees in the US -- but other places elsewhere.I've heard it is good.I just requested a sample and used it on my knee last night.  Very good results.  My main problem is night time and I think I'll save it for night or when I golf.  LindyYes, good results.
