basilar thumb arthritis, fusion surgery | Arthritis Information

My doctor is planning to do the anchovy tendon arthroplasty on my right dominant hand in May.  Recently I heard about the fusion surgery for b. thumb arthritis.  Can anyone give me any imput on this.  I'm afraid the joint will once more return to its present painful state with the tendon surgery.

Thank you

I can speak from personal experience. An artificial joint was placed in my thumb. The dr. said he did many of these and they worked so I went ahead. After a year I had surgery again to remove the artificial joint it did not fuse right, He then did the anchovy surgery. It's been 2 years and I can still use the hand with very little pain. The scar area remains a little numb. I am glad I had it done because I can do more things and don't have the severe pain, or have to rely on others to do simple things. I admit I do baby my hands because the other one is painful. Alll in all I am satisfied. If you have any concerns and think I can help let me know.

what was athe recovery period for the tendon surgery, did you have to learn to use your hand again and havae lots of physical therapy?
