Grrr... allergies again! | Arthritis Information

I cut the grass today and pulled some weeds out front. I'm allergic to grass. Allergies are going nuts!  I'm wondering if my cetirizine is as effective as the name-brand Zyrtec I was taking last year.  I'm going to buy a 7-day pack of name-brand Zyrtec tomorrow and see if that makes things any better.  It's always something!  At least I didn't break out in hives from cutting the grass, so the cetirizine must be doing something. Hi Jasmine - There is a product at the pharmacy that helps prevent the allergens from entering your body. It's a nasal spray and it is supposed to form a barrier to the allergens to stop them from entering your system.
I'm sorry I can't think of the specific name, but I'm sure a pharmacist would know. This has been a rough year at my house too where allergies are concerned.. If I think of the name, I'll let you knoow.
Hi Jasmine - There is a product at the pharmacy that helps prevent the allergens from entering your body. Nasalcrom... yep, I've tried it in the past.  It works OK, but you have to use it like 5 or 6 times a day in order for it to be effective.  I remember perhaps once or twiceReally it is best to change it up every year or so. Old meds work well also. I am a fan of clemestine fumarate tablets. They last twelve hours. Generic works very well. There comes a time when one should try a presciption nasal spray. Or just get Sjorgrens that will take care of the runny nose and watery eyes very quickly.

Good luck Jas, feel better soon.

Yes if you continue to cut the grass get some Flonase.
Yes if you continue to cut the grass get some Flonase.
Yea, I'd rather just find a broke teenager and a spare
Thats usually the way I handle the situation.I was going to ask you what your co pay was for Flonase. It is always justified to pay to have the grass cut.
Many years ago my husband suggested turning off the air conditioner and opening the windows to save money. My place of employment had the same idea at the same time. When my husband picked me up at work I said go imediatley to the Urgent Care. Turn out to be my very first asthma attack. Two quick acting shots, the first one didn't work. Along acting shot and a bag full of medicine. We spent more money not less.
Yikes!

We usually have the windows open in the house - we don't have central air, just a couple of window units (it's a really old house).  I'm usually OK, it's just these first weeks of spring and fall that get to me!!!  Even if the neighbors cut the grass, it doesn't tend to bother me inside the house... but when I'm cutting the grass and I'm getting all that fresh-cut grass thrown all over me, YIKES!!!  I've actually broken out in hives before from it.

BTW - the lawn mower was a Mother's Day present from my husband a few years back.  A nice shiny red one with a key ignition in addition to the pull-cord.  What a romantic he is! It could be worse... I have to do the snow shoveling in the winter time because DH had the nerve to have a heart attack a while ago, so his cardiologist has forbidden him to shovel snow.  I'll take grass cutting over snow shoveling any day.  I can cut the grass with a Sam Adams in my hand.Well my husband or now he is my ex husband would never have suggested opening the windows in Chicago. In Chicago my eyes swell up horribly and I sneeze constantly. Noticably misserable. We had moved from Chicago to Atlanta and the different pollens effected me differently. I didn't appear to be misserable. I just couldn't breath.
Well my husband or now he is my ex husband would never have suggested opening the windows in Chicago. Seattle is the absolute worst for me.  It doesn't matter what time of year I go there - it always seems to be green out there and I start sneezing as soon as I get off the plane.  Luckily when I had to travel there for business I was always working on computer systems at a pharmacy, and the pharmacist would hook me up with some Claritin or Zyrtec (back when they were Rx only!).
Jas...besides taking all the allergy meds I do something really simple when the grass is being cut, I have a spritzer bottle and every 5 mins or so i give my face a quick spritz. It works really well, I havent had a runny nose or itchy eye since. I also go to our local farm that sells local  honey , in the spring and summer I have 3 teaspoons a day, it has been more effective than the antihistamines.oh Jas.. I feel for you!  My husband has the issues with grass!  and He gets those damned hives.... takes a benadryl before mowing and then naps all afternoon!  ;)
luckily we either use a lawn service or one of my boys does it ...... but there have been times he's had to.. and it's so bad to watch..... swollen eyes, nose running and he wants to pull it off his face, and the hives.........  bad stuff.
hope that neighbor boy gets needy ;)

It's more than just runny eyes or itchy nose; I tend to break out in hives all over.  I'd have to take a garden hose with me.
oh Jas.. does it bother you a great deal if someone else mows and you show up later?  that gets DH going too... he suffers almost 24/7 during the summer!  Poor guy.
question: O my gosh allergies. I talked to my allergist yesterday...i am on everything, steroid eye drops, nasoquart nose spray, zyrtec, singulair, advair, and now benedryl before bed. OOOOO SPRING!

question:

Not near as bad as when I'm behind the mower.  I might get a bit sneezy, but what really seems to set me off is when the fresh-mown grass is all over my skin and clothes.  I have to strip and jump in the shower as soon as I'm done cutting the grass, and I can't sit down on fresh-cut grass either.  Uncut grass doesn't bother me too much.

Strange, eh?
NO! not strange at all.. DH is EXACTLY the same way!!  and he feels like he has creeping crawling things on his skin when it touches him....
I feel so badly for you. I know how he suffers.......
